You might say "dolls have fabric clothes" but a lot of action figures have cloth parts as well. You might say "action figured have articulation" but so do dolls like Monster High. Is there even any real difference?

Maybe because action figures have a more dynamic range than dolls?

Pretty much nothing really. The term "action figure" was only a marketing buzzword to make GI Joe seem far removed from Ken and Barbie It would be technically accurate to say we all collect dolls on this board.

These. IIRC, on the documentary "Toys that made us" (available on netflix), one of the guys responsible for creating (or marketing) GI Joe openly admits they create the term because they didn't want to be directly associated with barbie, but essentially they took a ken doll, put some military clothes and accessories and there you go, GI Joe was born. IIRC, they even had the same scale.

Basically, pick related.

if you were going to define them the difference between them isnt concrete, it's just that dolls are generally bigger, fully fabric clothes, less articulation etc.

I've pondered this question. My best answer:

Dolls tend to be naked, and can't stand on their own.

Action figures tend to be clothed and able to stand without support.
