I'm really not enjoying my toys lately because they have to be hidden away from the kids (5 and 2.5).

I went to go buy some detolfs yesterday and the first thing my 2yo did was try to climb inside. Naturally my husband vetoed that purchase.

It got me wondering what other toy enthusiasts do to keep their stuff safe from little kids.

My brother in law uses wall mounted shelving to display his favorite lego sets. It's up high enough so that the kids can't get to them if they wanted to.
Of course that doesn't give you as much display room as a detolf but at least you can display some things.

I personally don't have kids, but my sister comes visit at least 3 times a week with her kids (baby, 5 and 7). The thing I learned works best with her kids and other nephews/nieces is to just make a huuuge deal about touching my stuff. And I mean when one of them came into the living room with a toy, we would all get up and go "NOOOOO NO NO NO DON'T TOUCH THAT GIVE IT TO ME". Kids got so scared that eventually they would police each other. Several times I would stand outside my collection room eavesdropping, just to make sure they were behaving (but not wanting to ruin their fun) and would hear them saying to each other touch the toys, and making lists of which they wanted to for christmas, which I find super endearing.

I have a collection of random figures (mostly wrestling and Game of Thrones) that I use to help illustrate my book -- nothing of real value. So, when my 7 y/o niece comes over, one of the first things she ask is "Can we play with your action figures." I don't discourage her; anything to keep her imaginitive and off the computer.

It almost brings a tear to my eye when she ask for action figures of her own.

A child can wreck even a toy made of solid brick, it's not a matter of cost vs stability.
Besides a cheap 5POA figure is less likely to break simply because it's a hunk of plastic with 5 cuts. Something with 30 points of articulation is obviously going to have a lot more spots where it's likely to break

My strategy is to be unappealing to women and too shy to talk to them. It's been working pretty well so far.

Aside from that, I used to keep some cheap things around to give to my nieces when they wanted to play with something.

Display cases in a dedicated room, like an office or something they aren't supposed to be in. If you can't then do wall-mounted displays that are out of reach.

If neither of these are an option then you're fucked. I'm only just now with our new house able to display and have the kid understand what is and isn't off limits to him and he's 7.

Before that I had to get a lot of decoy toys. For example if you want them to not go after your Figuarts Homecoming Spidey then give them a Marvel Legend or something

I'm a huge manchild and my action figures are the least interesting thing to children who come by. I got nerf, light up puzzle toys, fidget cubes, spinners,keychains magnets, ripoff chinese ak47's that light up and make fart noises.

the action figures are the last thing they go for.

I don't have kids, but I would let them play with some of mine. Some would be hands-off because it's fragile and/or rare. I'd also teach them to treat their stuff well like they'd treat any other's toys. Some toys are great to be rough with, but others are more fragile and need to be treated with care.

I let my niece play with most of my toys because she is careful with them. I tell her if she breaks one it will break my heart. I also give her doubles that I don't want and incomplete figs I get in lots off ebay. Best part is anything I give her she plays with more than the shit my sister gives her and it pisses her off which makes me happy but that's not the reason I give her toys. I just love her and treat her like my own.

I had this in mind. I am in an apartment right now, but I am planning on the next place I live to be a house where I start my family. Thinking ahead, I plan to have my art table I use for drawing in a room with a lockable door. My art table goes in there, maybe the computer to keep my kids off the internet till they are old enough to get their own computers, then have my toy collection on shelves. Have the door locked when I am not in there to keep an eye on things.
