How do I even get a legit Tamagotchi?

There's so many fakes around that I don't dare to order anything off ebay.

Depends on what you want to spend.

At target currently there are anniversary releases of the original models. In japan though, tamagotchi have backlit colour screens now. The 4U for example can download items from an app on some NFC devices, items such as;

Wallpapers
Foods
Snacks
Minigames
Raisable characters
English patch (patches most menu text to english)

The original reissues have something like 12 characters, the 4U/4U+ has over 100.

They are in japanese (the 4U+ has no english patch yet, but guides and english manuals) but that doesn't make them impossible to play.

In that case, I would advise against buying 96 models especially in box.

Join the tamagotchi collectors group on facebook, sometimes people sell from their collections.

With all due respect, did you even try? Amazon has a bunch. Hobby Link Japan has a whole Tamagotchi category. For the older models, set your eBay search settings to US Only and you'll cut out a good 90% of the fake Tamagotchis right there. Keep an eye out on Instagram sales, too.

The download method is entirely different. Bandai threw a curveball on purpose so westerners wouldn't be able to enjoy it, the infrared runs at a weird frequency that is only compatible with Mix stations in Japan. No patch exists.

The IDL had an english line come out, but scalpers on ebay charge big money for them.

The 4U is partially translated, and is more gender neutral.

Also OP if you should happen to have any interest in Digimon virtual pets, I would recommend pre-ordering a 20th anniversary pendulum while you can. The 20th anniversary original virtual pets are really nice and it looks like they're adding some cool new features and digimon for the pendulums.

I don't know about other folks, but huge chunk of the appeal of virtual pets to me is having the standalone little LCD game. A phone app just isn't the same thing.

You can get those two as preorders on other sites if you want to avoid eBay. WithTheWill or whatever that digimon fansites called has a forum topic with a list of good places. It'll be my first digivice since my season 2 one as a kid. Oh yeah, I also ordered an Omegamon 20th Anniversary one. I don't think the language should be too much of an issue.

I got an Omegamon ver. 20th a few weeks ago, on my second wave of digital kids right now. Sinobali did a PDF translation of the manual and I kept it handy on my phone for the first couple days or so, which made it pretty easy to navigate. Not a lot of options either so you memorize it all very fast.
