My theory is that Mexicans who come over to the US are typically the more poorer subset who have more old school beliefs (ie being super religious, machismo, women in traditional roles and remaining chaste, etc.). Thus the kids who saw DBZ identified with the super macho aspects of it.

90's mexican kid here. Basically, it was the start of a new generation. There was some dubbed anime before DB, but most of them were more on the really "old/retro" style like Candy Candy and all those weird ass Capitan Harlock look alikes.
So DB, Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya (all started airing around the same time) brought a new perspective for "chinese cartoons" (as mexican moms call them), since they had more action and a more elaborated plot than Looney Tunes/Mickey Mouse type of cartoons.
Personally I got bored of DBZ after Cell saga, and started leaning towards Digimon/Pokemon.
I don't think it's related to machismo, but Goku was the only "superhero" kids could roleplay as during those years, since Batman/Superman didn't have updated cartoons, and Marvel wasn't really a thing here

But if iirc it was broadcasted arond noon, so most kids were still at school/having lunch while DB was always scheduled after 5 p.m.
Not many people had access to cable tv so we had to stick to national tv which means no reruns
