Been listening to toy related YouTube losers rant about shit like the closure of Toys Я Us as background noise. Vintage Star Wars figures. That kinda shit.

Fags seem incredibly passionate. They mention how easy or difficult it is to pose the figures. Realism. You know.

I just assumed you kept shit boxed. How does a grown man play with action figures?

I'm not trolling. I don't give a fuck. I play video games constantly. I'm just wondering if that's a legit fucking thing.

Or is it more about creating a battle scene for display on a shelf or whatever the fuck?

Appreciate it. I loved Street Sharks as a kid. Same with Spawn and the original Jurassic Park. That's why I'm somewhat interested in /toy/ shit.

They are fun to build, pose, and fiddle with. Dunno what do tell you, dude. Not sure why you'd ever keep them in a box.

I doubt anyone here actually plays with toys in an unironic fashion. Rather, most people probably either conciously or subconcously think of their toy collection as a 3d-art installation even if it might sound ridiculous to admit. The way it's all presented, the posing, the organization, the way the colors compliment each other. Of course not everyone takes things this far, but I do. I like to organize my shelves/displays until everything just "clicks" for me. It's a satisfying feeling when everything just works. I love it even more when something I want doesn't exist and I have to start customizing the shit myself. This is where a collection becomes really personal and the hobby becomes even more addicting. This is where stuff like 3d printing etc come in for most people these days. It's not a bad hobby desu. Think of it as real life 3d models. It's like you downloaded a cool model for source filmmaker or garrys mod and you can pose it and shit, set up the lighting for it, take screenshots etc, except it's actually real and not just pixels on a screen. But once again, it depends on how far you want to take it. A lot of people are satisfied with their standard issue transformers detolf display and there's nothing wrong with that since it's all highly personal. The more creative and skilled you are as a person, the further you can take the hobby I suppose. The final stage is probably creating your own toys or something.

There are people that keep their toy boxed, but I don't see the point in that. Maybe if it's a super rare piece.

Very true. Hell my Macross stuff may get touched once a year. Transform it than display. Same goes for Transformers stuff. My figures I may handle a lot more just for varying poses. Other stuff I may touch just rotating them in and out of boxes. I wish I had the time to play with them. But I mainly just go in the display room just to look at them to get my mind in a good place. Because life is a stressful cunt.

It's not like if you are posing a figure around that it means you're in a bathtub with your rubber ducky. Yes, the point is to pose them to make them look nice, in different scenes, in artistic shots, etc.

Funny that when you hear people talking about posing toys you assume they are also creating fantasy scenarios and scripts to go along with it instead of say, a photograph.

You are a weird one, OP, but I suppose we can appreciate your inquisitiveness.

I think I legitimately *played* with my action figures until I was 14-15. Then I started getting interested in cars and trying to have sex, and they were sort of supplanted.

But for a while there at the end, I had some fucking incredible running story arcs for my figures. The toys of a child, but the imagination/narrative abilities of a young adult, it was breddy awesome while it lasted.

I love to build hectic cars, room dioramas and other little accessories for my lego minifigures. Pose them around doing shenanigans. I don't actually do 'live' in hand on the fly playing going pew pew. I definately do that internally though. I try to channel that energy and associations into coherent silly stories and jokes.

I mostly just like the design of toys. How they feel in your hand, how they look, if you can pose them in wacky poses etc. I love how the old Masters of the Universe figures feel and look, the contrast between the rubbery and "handmade" feeling naturalistic heads the bright candy colours and mass produced feeling bodies. I also love older Japanese kaiju vinyls for their old fashioned handmade quality and wacky designs that mix old traditions and nature with extreme current era sensibilities.

What i like toys is that they allow people to directly handle and engage with them instead of a 'dead', quarantined and immobile artefact on display in a museum.

So in short:
Display
Photography
Building/modifying/customization/creation
Collection (in box autists mostly do it for collection and "value")

I'd say browse some different threads and lurk for a while. Even if you don't care, you can expect some nice nostalgia.

It's 3D memorabilia of shit you like only you can do stuff with it. Figures that transform like Transformers or Macross you get a 3 in one, where a toy can be multiple things plus a puzzle to get back and forth between modes. Some engineering work that goes into this stuff is cool enough on its own.
