What is the driving plot of the sequels? The downfal of the First Order? Inevitable, but very lacklustre as the First Order has only just seized power and have literally been in semi-control of the galaxy for three or four days.
The defeat of Snoke? But he was killed just to subvert expectations.
The redemption of Kylo? Seems to have been squelched, he can only be defeated now.
The rise of Rey? That's about all they have, but she's already super powerful and is the most wooden character out of them all.
All these plot points directly parallel the OT, which is why they're struggling to settle on any single idea because it just inevitably leads to copying what George has already done, hence all the shitty subversion Rian did.
