Many of them are detailed and large. All the fantasy pins I have are 3" and above and most have some special detail to them, like sandblasted glitter, jewels, or being multiple pins layered together for a nice effect.
The quality depends on the original artist and how well they understand the need to illustrate a certain way for a factory to replicate, especially a Chinese factory, as well as what factor the maker uses and their level of quality control. Some are horrible and derpy but many are really nice and, honestly, I think many official Disney pins don't come close to comparing in terms of aesthetics. Maybe the recent profile series that I think is exclusive to cast members comes close.
Many pinmakers even have their own fantasy pin "series" going on, similar to how Disney has their own series. ("Windswept Princess," "Stained Glass Art Nouveau," "Characters as Mermaids")that sort of thing). Most of the time they are fanart, but a select few people use official art in some capacity because they're dumb.
If you google disney fantasy pin you can see a wide range of them, from the "why would anyone buy this" to the better ones. I don't have pic related fantasy pin but it's on my wish list.
