Just a thought I had. Maybe they're prototypes or very early concepts of whatever sets Lego had originally planned for 2003. Similar to how this early Toa Metru poster featured a prototype for Krekka.

I don't know what I expected, but 11 year old me was very disappointed. Bionicle had this incredible marketing that would build an atmosphere most of its story media didn't really manage (or probably wasn't allowed) to follow through.

Holy shit, you niggers weren't kidding about the prices going up. It's kind of a weird feeling. 90% of my G2 sets are deconstructed at this point, and I don't plan on buying multiples or anything to keep built while the others are scrap, but the fact that even the small sets are stupid expensive now just makes the idea of getting a few extra masks or parts even less of a reality. Why is G2 so overpriced but G1 sets are reasonable? And there are barely any used G2 sets on the market. Just new.

It's no secret that Bionicle's existence as a children's Lego toy line was a blessing and a hindrance. At times I wonder whether the base story and concept could stand on its own without the limitations of Lego and the toy industry (like as a hypothetical cartoon, comic, book or movie series or video game franchise), given extensive rewrites and other changes of course.
I know they attempted to test that with the graphic novels, and the idea went nowhere, but that failure was due to a variety of other factors.

Still, even then they're more expensive then previously. Remember when this shit was heavily discounted everywhere and it was all super cheap sans the summer 2016 sets? Now they're all expensive. I just wasn't expecting the spike in price so soon. Shoul'd grabbed some spare Protectors and Creatures.

I have all of the sets and even I saw coming from a mile away that they won't be cheap later down the line. Best hope for the prices to go down is to wait few years until the kids who grew up with g2 grow up even more and decide it's gay to play with Lego and sell them to have money for new CoD or something.

Compare the teeth to the rest of the body. Thok white was a little darker and a little more blue in tint. I used to refer to it as sand white. Not sure if others did as well.

yeah It's like the different shades of silver (not metal) and nuGold, the different thickness/circles density (?) of tubes, the few parts that were remolded a bit... unless you're into autistic details like me it doesn't make any difference.

I loved when Bonkle pieces showed up unrelated sets, especially if they were recolors. This version of Tahu's sword is most peculiar. It has a touch of yellow on it, but on most pictures there's so little yellow visible that you wonder why Lego went through the trouble of recoloring the piece at all. But it's a welcome effort nonetheless.

Yeah I had to clip the sockets in to avoid resizing anything. Works perfectly fine if you're not too annoyed by the clipping (which would happen anyways on a model as restrictive as this.

I'm trying to figure out how to clean up the textures (for some reason a flat colored texture came out looking like it's slicked in oil) but I have never textured before and have no idea where I would start learning.

It's more weird they didn't reuse his limb armor pieces. Only set that had them. But Piraka and Inika armor, Lego kept spamming those.

Of course I can see why they might have abandoned it. It's bulky and has clearance issues with other parts.

I was thinking in terms of Bionicle sets but you're right.
Still, it's strange how certain pieces just fell by the wayside, while others were reused all over the place. This was especially annoying to me for the Bara Magna sets, which were supposed to be from a different world, yet they still kept using many of the same basic parts.

The whole Bara magna setting was a huge mistake.

They could have had some cool ass alien planet themed stuff, with Mata Nui being a stranded survivor, battling monstrosities left by the Great Beings.
Alternatively they could have gone with a more spaceshipy direction. Have the mask of life get scooped up in space by a band of space pirates.

They could have used the new setting to introduce new primary elements to work with Mata Nui's life element.

I get they wanted a soft reboot but I really hated that we had to leave the Matoran Universe to do that. I really couldn't myself to care about a bunch of "like Matoran and Toa but worse" losers on an endless desert when a war was waging in the universe I watched develop for eight straight years. We could've had a team of rookie Toa fight against Teridax's new servants instead. "Mad Max except not that cool" wasn't really Bionicle anymore.

It had some good ideas, but like with many things in Bionicle, Bara Magna was halfassed and should be rethought from the ground up.
A former god stuck in a "mortal" body, having to learn to form personal relations and master the art of fighting, that's a cool prospect. Landing smack dab in the middle of a local ongoing conflict is an interesting approach to do that. The fact that he also had to uncover secrets related to his own creation was also neat. He could grow as a character, become a skilled warrior, but he's still basically a god and has an immensely powerful object stuck on his head. It would have been cool to see Mata Nui lose his shit and turn his sand-body into some monstrosity to fight the Skrall, and see how his new friends react to that.

The idea of a boring desert planet was crappy, though. The villages were super underused and didn't matter much, beyond being robot parts. Too bad we barely got to see that, what a cool visual it would have made for, seeing the people live in the shadow of derelict parts of a giant mech. Hell, why not show us glimpses of their former culture, the wreckage of the ancient war? Would have made Bara Magna more than just a dull shithole.
The characters still looked mostly the same as the old ones, and continued the trend of the Inika build with only minimal variety. And despite being mere "people", the still lived for a bajillion years, which had the retarded effect of making the oldass deity voiced by Michael Dorn the youngest character of the bunch.
The Mad Max-factor was underutilized because the vehicles were brought in too late and barely served a purpose. There were apparently giant monsters roaming the sands, but we barely saw those either. So many halfassed ideas and such a terrible lack of atmosphere.
This non canon teaser poster was the coolest Bara Magna ever got.

It is but it's just extraneous fluff. Most of what's in there didn't matter and was wasted far too fast. No real exploration, no getting to know the places closely, and none of the villages were as memorable as the Mata Nui ones or the Metru Nui districts. And they're discarded immediately to make the robot out of them. What we did get to see a lot of on Bara Magna was sand and generic wastelands. Po-Wahi and -Metru did it better.
The secret Great Being hideout was nice though, added some literal and figurative depth, and the Maze could have been an interesting place if Lego didn't murder 2010.

I agree, Voya, Mahri and Karda Nui were shit places. But those years had such rushed plots that it made sense not to elaborate on them. Bara Magna was our introduction to a new world, but most of our knowledge about it came from an obscure guidebook in a pitiful case of telling instead of showing.

On one hand, I suppose desert setting isn't exactly easy to do. Water setting? Tubes, fins, lots of transparent stuff. Air setting? Give everyone wings or jetpacks (and even then, 2008 was nowhere the tenth of how cool it could've been). Desert setting? Either you go post-apoc like Mad Max or Fist of the North Star did or it gets pretty boring. But that visual style wasn't really doable with the parts they had to work with. Ironically something like Slizers/Throwbots, with their retro "thrown together" feel, would've looked more interesting and fitting than what we got.

On the other, I'm not sure how much I can excuse them: even with their limited resources it's not hard to figure out they didn't give much of a shit by then. Most new parts looked like a cheap imitation of the 2001 feel rather than something that was actually meant for a desert setting. If you showed me the 2009 figures and told me they're supposed to be desert warriors I would say I would've never figured it out on my own, except maybe for the Vorox/Zesk (and even then..).

Add the fact that none of the newly introduced villains held a candle to what we were used to and it's not hard to see why 2009 was welcomed coldly by old fans and didn't manage to attract new blood. Half-assed, is the best way to put it. Like 90% of what Lego makes.

Come to think of it, limiting the environments to one or two types of elements is an odd choice anyway, when your gimmick is making six distinct elemental toys. And given that apparently the color brown doesn't sell well, choosing a desert is even more of an oddball decision. The Glatorian were some of the most colorful sets of latter-day Bonkle, a lot more elemental than the previous years' sets, so the desert setting had less of a thematic impact.
I'm also disappointed that places like Iconox had so little use. Bara Magna wasn't only a desert, it's just that Lego constantly advertised that aspect of it. But there were also mountains and icy regions. Would have been great if those got a bigger focus. One wave of sets (or half a wave, like with the Phantoka and Mistika) living on the desert flat lands and another designed around mountainous environments.

Agreed. Bionicle really came out swinging with it's first setting in Mata Nui. You had a huge range of different environments that matched up to each distinct elemental group and it was all really primal and organic which went really well with the initial tribal vibe they were going for. Then they came out with Metru Nui which was a pretty big jump, but it felt like a really nice evolution of the core environmental concepts fans had become familiar with in Mata Nui. Every other locale beyond those two felt either undeveloped or super limited. It would've been better imo if they had taken the core idea of 6 elemental segments of the greater environment and then paired it with a new thematic twist every time rather than just making one of the elements the dominant trait. Kinda like how Metru Nui was just Mata Nui but industrial. Bara Magna could've been Mata Nui but post-apocalyptic instead of just keeping the characters trapped in a desert for the whole story.

Interestingly, Voya Nui attempted something like that, as it also had six basic elemental areas, only divided differently than Mata or Metru Nui. But those almost never came up in the story apart from a few mentions here and there and some comic panels, and none of the characters actually lived in those regions.

The Ignition Trilogy's fast-paced, plot-driven nature wouldn't have allowed for much exploration anyway, and by the end almost all the locations were destroyed or abandoned, or just plain stopped being relevant to the wider story. It was like a trade off.

Man, I remember playing with my voyatoran running from the Piraka and fighting waves of Nektann, as they roamed Voya Nui discovering ancient OOmN labyrinths and temples adorned with carvings of the Inika, the true heroes of the island, as they slowly learned that the Piraka weren't Toa and they'd been duped by former Dark Hunters. I suppose that's why I appreciate 06 so much. The story didn't do much but if you made shit up yourself, there was still a whole new island to explore. Much unlike say, Karda Nui or Bara Magna which were just plateaus and deserst sands.

While the Mahri Nui arc is one of my favorites, would it really be necessary to keep it, if someone were to create a new adaptation of the story and had to make it a standalone feature? You could keep Voya Nui a part of the Southern Continent and have Matoro sacrifice himself while the others fight Vezon and the Piraka, and cut the whole underwater stuff.

I never understood why they released those two Ko-Matoran, and it was especially annoying that they just nameslapped Kopeke on one that didn't even have his original colors or his mask. The other day I got a little nostalgic after looking through this thread, started looking through BS01 and just...fuck. I forgot how much retarded shit happened towards the end of Bionicle. Also, what's this shit about Atakus and Perditus being in the cult of Velika? Where'd that come from? And why these literal who's? Literally for what purpose? Everything about the aborted Velika storyline is so fucking dumb.

Pretty much what >>6901721 said. The more Bionicle progressed the more it got left unguarded and the more Greg took control of the story. It gets fairly noticeable starting from 2008 (the 2007 serials were still believable side stories) but it gets really retarded 2009 onwards up to when the serials were abandoned altogether.
I think the retardation started with Takanuva's travels since that's when the concept of parallel worlds was introduced. That really let Greg use his author obsessions to his fullest, like secret cults, superpowered females, sudden deaths for shock value, secret agents, alternate realities, [toyspoiler]femdom[/toyspoiler], muh lovecraftian deities and so on.

Similarly, I consider proper canon to be the 2001-2010 story and the 2007 serials (no matter all the sorts of retarded shit that happened, it's still canon). 2008 serials are borderline, and 2009+ serials are unacceptable.

Reign of Shadows, but I had to look that up. There were so many crossovers and so much leakage between the different serials by the end that they mesh together in my head. I have to say, the serials really made it easy for me to get over the line's cancellation.
As much as the writer liked to play the "don't like, don't read" card, if the choices were getting nothing or seeing a world, story and characters I cared about for years being shat on by bad fiction, I'd much rather go with the first option.

The serials and 2009 did that for me. On one hand the characters I knew and grew up with were getting raped by Joss Whedon; on the other I was forced to watch a boring story in a boring world that didn't even register as Bionicle if it weren't for Mata Nui's presence. I'm sorry I made you spent so much money for stuff like this, mum. The feet are still pretty good parts though, and the hockey stick can work as a weapon. But man early 00s Lego was really fucking weird.

Crap, my sister got some of these back when we were kids. I guess she saw how much fun I had with my "boy" Lego so she asked my parents for this stuff. Funnily enough, she played more with my Lego and the Clikits computer game than the actual kit itself.

I don't know, some of the modern Ninjago shit is really well built and has some great parts usage and variation. Unfortunately the theme has just been going on for far too long for any of it to appear novel on the surface.

True, Ninjago is pretty good too, though it appears it's getting a bit stale to me after all these years. Then again I've never bought any set, due to a number of reasons.
Ninjago minifigs range from decent to great (very few actually bad ones) and some interesting constraction parts too.

I guess since this was mentioned now is as good a time as ever to show off my mocs since I use some of their pieces.

Now I know it's not amazing compared to a lot of the other stuff people share here- but I recently got back into bonkles after finding my old massive treasure trove of parts and decided to show my love with some creations of mine.

This guy doesn't really have a name, but I was thinking maybe he could be Pridak's dad or something (Pridad..?) since I used a bunch of parts from his set and he kinda matches the aquatic creature theme.

Keyword is supposedly, but I heard Lego had a change in direction regarding Bionicle, deciding to keep it going instead of ending it at year 1, ditch the Maori-inspired stuff and build their own lore with more coherent storytelling. And the developer company was shady as hell to boot. It's also been suggested 9/11 may have made Lego wary of releasing a "violent" video game, but this always sounded bogus to me, since the game didn't seem overly violent from what's been seen of it (outside the Manas cutscene anyway). But for what it's worth, the development of the 2003 game began almost exactly after the 2001 got canned, and although that one's a piece of garbage too, apparently it was more in line with what Lego wanted from the franchise.

Bonkle is actually pretty affordable in general these days. Takanuva and Makuta are both big sellers though, so they'll cost more than the lesser titans or a Toa.

Was anyone else disappointed with the origins of Skeleton Raiders (the villian wave of the first year G2)? I always imagined that they were originally a seperate race of beings that had been previously been in combat with the Okotians and became the guardians of the city after a "treaty". Makuta had promised them something they wanted so that he wouldn't have to fight Ekimu alone (basically he convinced them to join his Coup). But nope, Lego just made them pirates from some other Island.
