I've been in the Glyos scene for quite a while now, but I've always found the story a bit of a mystery. How do you guys learn all this stuff and keep it straight? Is it all via passcodes, or is there additional story I can read somewhere?

Fuck I wish we could get actual, official Glyos books and such. Like those 70s/80s sci-fi books, with the really nice cover art like pic related. The comics are great but I'd love to see some short stories about the most famous Glyos characters.

I've considered writing some snippets based off of photos I take, but I'm afraid my writing won't be good. I might just have to try though.

So all shit posting aside, why did Matt stop posting lists and big show off pics in the week leading up to the drop?

All we ever hear from the man himself is "we're trying new things, constantly evolving, bla bla, some of you will like it and some of you won't but we are eternally greatful for those who come on the journey!!" And I say to this, who are these fucking people that like the current format?

Before there was hype leading up to the drop, lists to help us plan out what's what, lots to discuss and dream of for days at a time before we see things. Now I check the site a few hours before a drop, see a couple of single figure photos and think "oh.. guess I'll look at the store in a bit and see what else is there.."

People say "oh you need to say shit in official channels" but there's ALWAYS people saying how much they miss lists and drop pics and as far as ive seen no one is like "damn, yeah, I love barely knowing a drop exists and then seeing bland photos of one figure at a time a couple hours before I buy them if I buy anything".. just miss the glyos hype train I guess, I used to look forward to the drop ritual so much but now there's literally no activity until 12 hours before and it dies off the next day for 6 weeks until the next one.

Most collectors still get a rush from an almost full surprise hours before the drop. Unlike Spymonkey who blows their entire load in an hour, a week before their drop and nonstop till their drop, then crickets till their next drop.

Damn, salty response for a valid concern. Matt just replied to the latest guy to bring this up in the comments, I'm not gonna bother reposting but the jist is the same as always, basically he's doing what he wants to stay passionate about the line. Personally I don't see how doing very similar drops over and over again and not even bothering to make cool displays anymore equals keeping things fresh and passionate, but I'm not the big guy. I do see more and more comments from him on the blog that faintly suggest gloom and doom, "before the current falls, trying to stay passionate" etc etc and others over the past few years that make it seem like he might be in the beginning stages of ready to move onward.

Regardless it's been a hell of a toyline and even if I definitely preferred things the first couple of years, I am always happy to see new drops and it will remain one of my favorite toylines of all time.

I would not be surprised if at some point in the future TGB and company essentially took over glyos. The fact that Matt severely cut down on going to shows and spending time with the super fans and some of his closest friends and collaboraters seems like a very telling sign to me, I cant imagine a world where spending a couple of days vacation with your biggest fans and the company that you gave birth to doesn't sound like a good time and yet he makes fewer and fewer appearances. I'm not in the inner circle though so what do I know, it's just a sinking feeling.

He only did San Diego and New York in the same year for a few short years. Then it was only New York and since then only DesignerCon. Those guys can probably only afford one major con per year. I think you guys are overanalyzing things. Yes, health concerns and of cons and rising manufacturing prices and China! and fan drama are real sources of stress, but you have to consider the fact that dude's been devoting his entire life to the same project for over ten years. I've been with Glyos from the beginning, and I get where Matt is coming from. How many Pheyden repaints does it take to start to feel like "this has been fun, but what's next?" Glyos is a great toy line—maybe my favorite toy line—and I'll be devastated the day it ends. But it has to end. All things have to end. And I'm honestly excited to see what Onell and co do next.

I think drops over the past few years have gotten pretty stale, but not because of the nature of the line. I'm honestly baffled by the line up choices for the most part, it took years but we've finally gotten to the point where it seems like there's lots of new tampos and paint ideas being tossed around, but the fact that we get countless drops of the same couple of figures (nonstop nobotos, glyarmor, nobotos wearing glyarmor, etc) really makes me question things. There's tons of glyos molds that see almost no use, at this point there's no reason I should have trouble tracking down certain molds for building and yet I do. A more consistent rotation of the formerly available glyos items would go a long way to keeping things fresh

Some of the things I don’t get: why make a “fan club” if you’re just going to close it after an arbitrary deadline/number of people, discouraging future fans who found out about it after the fact? Why trumpet having the license if you’re not going to give people the opportunity to buy “classic” versions of the figures except for brief preorders or random special drops spaced out biannually if that? Detail lines are more expensive because China basically charges based on the times a brush is lifted to the figure. More human involvement required. I'm assuming the paint masks and tampos are done by machine, or at least with minimal human involvement.

Yep. Takes a while, but it works and can confirm it looks great. It even made me like the Granthan head, and I usually dislike it because I think the paint makes the fine sculpted detail look mushy.

It's been vaguely stated that it's not something they are "able" to do anymore ie the large vinyl drops like they used to, but I suspect it's more like they are not "willing" to do it since the most expensive cost is the molds and those are already paid for. When they did the Lego wave it was made to be a big deal that the rig was back for a single drop, it cost barely more than it used to and sold out super quick so obviously they CAN do it, It's more likely that they're just scared of ordering a bunch and it not selling, if a couple of figures sit around for 2 years they've lost a couple grand, if they order vinyl and it bombs it's goodbye glyos.

An alternative that seems more likely of happening(as in possible, not that anyone is willing or able to do this) is for someone else to order exclusive vinyl through Matt and sell them on their own, so 0 financial risk. You're looking at it wrong, that would never happen. This is no different than Godbeast selling a crayboth, if a third party or sister company wanted to run vinyl they (likely) could. They just don't want to. So if someone started a sister company to run vinyl they could in theory do it, it's just whether or not Matt and Onell would be open to someone else putting together drops with product they didnt originally create. Guys... How do you disassemble a glyos? I just got my first ones (two Villser, a hub set, and some swing joints) and I just can't figure it out. I tried to pop one of the side parts off the hub set and it felt like breaking it, and now that piece is a little wobbly. Now I'm reading online about people building elaborate boxes with blow dryers and heating the figures before disassembling. What?? Do I have to do this? Are they always just tight at first? I couldn't even take one of. The Villser's heads off.

You won't break a Glyos figure but it's easier to pull them apart if you heat it up. Put it in a plastic bag and dip it into hot water for a few seconds and it'll loosen the pieces.

I usually don't bother though and pry apart figures with like a dime.

Wrong guy. The autographs are by Mel Birnkat, the original designer of OSM from the 60s.

Gary is Gary Schaeffer, the guy who currently owns or runs the OSM brand. Besides overcharging for the OSM figures (and even jacking up the prices of his own stuff when they get scarce), he's notorious in the Sofubi scene for acquiring low run and hard to get pieces and then immediately flipping them on to eBay for huge markups. Basically a scalper, which is not cool among Sofubi collectors.

I guess you could say that just having any new figure was eagerly awaiting since Noboto was the last full new fig years earlier. But no one was jumping up and down for a Villser. It didn't help that over the years Villser was basically just shown as a virus of random parts, then prototyped as a hulking vinyl toy, then finally brought to life in a totally static bland looking figure with questionable at BEST design choices.

People want(ed) the Delphi.

Okay, after getting my hands in my first Glyos I've made some conclusions.

The Pheyden body sucks. It's not posable, it's not buildable, swing joints look goofy on it, the glyarmor just makes it worse. You can't do anything with the hub set. (I don't have axis joints yet.) The Sarvos head is totally uninteresting. The Bird head is awesome. Pheyden's head I'm sure is nostalgic now, but it's pretty ugly.

Villser is fine. Everyone shits on it for no reason. Builds have been really underwhelming but at least it looks cool and dynamic. I hope axis joints help.

Glyans are amazing and are everythimg I thought Glyos were supposed to be. Swing joints and hub set make them great.

It's not fucking possible to remove a switch pin without damaging it. I have to use pliers but none of my joints lie flat when I use the switch pins anymore.

Brother, I have no idea how you're fucking up this bad, but I have never damaged a switch pin nor had to use pliers. You can typically just pry them out with your nail. At least wrap your pliers like you're working with finished metal or something.

It helps to push or pry it to one side and wiggle it out to the other side, a couple times until it comes loose. but if you have no nails or something, you're gonna have a bad time.

Also the only problem with Pheyden is the lack of back/foot holes, but he's the classic pocket guy, he's just what he is, you pretty much wanna stick with the glyans and buildmen for making your own shit, even the accessories on their own are great, take a look at the Phase Sentinel (left one in the picture) or Argenesis

Use your teeth on switch pins. I've never damaged one using this method in like 5 years of Glyos building. Just be sure you don't use too much force and accidentally swallow it, haha.

Also, the hub set was made long after the Pheyden mold...it wasn't really meant for it. You can still find ways to use those parts on a Traveler build though, you just gotta get more creative. That's basically how Glyos works, you can get most things to work together but you might have to finagle them in more creative ways than simply A -> B. I mean shit, I've even seen several Cray builds, and that figure seems limited as all hell at first glance.

Wish I'd gotten more than one set of axis joints now. There's a way to fix that...

The extras this time were a pinkish see-through crayboth, and purple axis joints.

Kind of a bummer. The orange axis joints are just different enough in color and sheen from the orange paint accents that I can't use them with the deep space Glyan. Shame, because I got one white and two orange axis sets to make an axis armored Gylan.

Matt designed it. It works great with Maxx. We got Nazgar from it. The Darkness head and Nazgar brain are on the Zeroid mold so that is three new characters in one run.

I don't get why the homage figures are all travellers. Yeah, this latest one is pretty cool, but wouldn't it make more sense especially given the drop to have the same paint effect on a clear blue hubset with a white DSG? It even has a backpack like the original figure. I've thought This about several homage figs but this is by far the most obvious offender.

This is actually a pretty cool idea. I dig the idea of having this whole Adventure People lineup with a few different molds represented.

But I also understand what Matt is doing and I'm fine with that too. The Traveler is like a blank canvas here, (you could think of it like a DIY vinyl toy like a Munny) and Matt is just splashing them in homage colors/decos. This can be very cool too, the neat thing about that is seeing how he made the design work even on a canvas that wasn't meant for it.

I think RIT dye is still the way most folks do it. I heard they changed the formula and it doesn't work so well on plastic anymore, but an anon in some other thread informed me that it does still work, he just had to use like three packets.

RIT dye does require boiling, so you need to watch your parts carefully and make sure they don't warp/deform.

Drops are literally garbage compared to what they used to be. The figures look worse than they did back in 2010-11ish and cost more. The fun drops that had things like ships, flight crews and commanders vs a band of robots or ranks of specialist soldiers has been dropped for repetitive drops that somehow have fewer characters than when we were first getting new molds 7-8 years ago. This caused people to stop caring, and the boards shutting down happened in the middle of the worst years of glyos so there was no reason to waste any effort on finding where to land. The loss of the Matt and Jesse duo hurt things too, they were pretty involved and celebrity like in the community. No other sister company had the sense of brotherhood or easy compatibility with the main line, the glyos community now is basically the Godbeast shilling mushis nonstop or the pizza idiots doing whatever they do. It was a special and rare thing that felt organic- both the growth of the toylines and the community- and I feel like everyone involved at the time knew it. Going through drop nights together along with the cryptic and sneaky blog posts leading up to them was fantastic. Passcodes were fun, hidden figures were great, customs and new molds constantly happening and meeting up at toyshows.. it all contrubited and word and pictures spread and glyos really grew.

Until it didn't.

I'll keep this short. The reason we're dead is because the lack of community enthusiasm. Onell feels like its gone all "you just gotta know" any more. They don't hype up for their own drops, they don't post lists at all, no storyline. There's just not spark left any more. Bleh.

No one even posts what the mystery figure look like most of the time. At least this time some people did. We used to be surprised when it took a WHOLE HOUR for the store to sell out. I just looked, and the entire last drop is still in stock.

No one's excited enough to post what they got. I'd have more enthusiasm if there was some excitement. I just can't get on board with the homages. They seem weirdly lazy to me and whenever I have one, I never feel like I can take it apart and build with it. It's clearly intended to be a completed THING, and I tend to view it as such rather than a set of parts I can build with. I want another drop like the ZED drop. That was a great time. I just hope he continues solid waves with good building colors; the last three real types have been alright and they mix well together. I'm tired of the homages like everyone else, and honestly, I haven't felt truly excited enough by any of the colorways to buy huge hauls recently. I think the last wave that intensely excited me was the copper plastic with the aqua paint, that shit was sexy. Eh, the fancier paint on Glyans the less I want to armybuild them. I got a bunch of old Volkriun (more than in this pic now) and Glyaxia Glyans armybuilt. When they look too fancy I see themm ore as commander/hero units. For fucks sake just give me a block and extensions. That's all I want, I beg you, Matt.

You can accuse me of rose colored glasses, but I kinda miss the days when homage figures meant tracking down colored parts until you could build it yourself. It was really interesting too, cause everyone had their own build ideas--so you could end up seeing five or ten completely different Glyos Optimus Primes. Tracking down the various color parts you need has gotten much harder as time has gone on. Honestly, I've been kinda curious about OSM for a while but too turned off by the prices to make the leap.

At least give us SOME travleler mold...maybe a new one? New torso, new heads, new limbs, something!!! $8-10 ea. with plenty of accessories to load up on and do what only Glyos can do. Anyone can repaint their shit like a Gremlin...only Glyos can do Sentry Sarvos, axis-armored Pheyden, etc. Come on!!! When they were doing only build-based drops, people complained that they missed paint and panel lines, and everyone said those days are in the past, paint's not coming back. Now that it's back, unpainted Glyos is gone forever, never to return. The best drops were the ones with like 1 or two painted, named figures, then some color swapped pairs of builder figures. It's an easy middle ground to hit.

Back when I had a collection of about 100(at least 15 of which were from the latest Glyaxia wave, which I would later regret heavily) I'd build/reconfigure stuff all the time, but it's hard to make a truly unique looking build, it just always looks like big Pheyden, armored Noboto, and if you don't use a pre selected head building a head is a nightmare. And now with them painting parts, build potential is even slimmer.
And their flagship figure has nearly 0 build potential, unless you heavily invest in parts.
I know I'd still enjoy this line far more if they had multiple figures that didn't use the same Pheyden body over and over.
I know Matt would never do it, but if he did a Kickstarter to introduce 5-10 new figures I'd be all over it.

Today I was thinking about what I missed most about Glyos. Some of the most fun I had was buying random mishmash lots on eBay or handfuls of parts on OctoberToys. The mystery of what you'd get, the fun of picking through the parts and being able to add to my custom builds, etc. I have built up sort of a sizeable Glyos collection over the years, and even have some relatively rare and/or old parts and figures in it.

I don't wanna rap on the guys that purely collect, but I've always hated that mentality and feel it's responsible for my own loss of interest over the past few years. I always liked to build with the stuff and come up with neat and interesting builds, but ever since Matt and co. stopped releasing larger varieties of parts in the same color, and some altogether (hub sets anyone?), I haven't had a good opportunity to make some cool shit. That paired with the less-than-ideal amount of lead-time causes me to miss most drops. I think I've seen like 2 big drops in the past year with a large part selection in interesting colors, but missed them because they're announced like 2 days beforehand and I don't check the blog every day. Maybe that's my fault, but honestly I don't feel interested enough to check as often anymore. Smaller drops with a few specially-painted figures and 1 or 2 accessory sets are cool for collectors, but I like my part variety too much to become invested in buying stuff that I'm never gonna build with, so I just don't. Eh, to each their own.

But the thing is that these drop WERE "big" building based drops. THANK GOD FOR THE WHITE BUILDSTATION. When was the last time we got all 4 accessory sets in the same color in a drop, plus 5 figures?? I missed the shit out of hubs and DSGs, this is the first drop I spent a lot on in a while.. and even then it sucks knowing that I have a half assed painted figure with a bunch of random black parts. Getting away from color swaps and simple detail lines was a mistake. I feel like every evolution of glyos is worse than the last. Going to paintless figures was terrible, but going back to expensive painted figures is even worse because they aren't painting them the one way that anyone likes- with detail lines. So instead now even in a building wave I have this weird bullshit where I have to just deal with a bunch of parts that are painted black for no reason. And this is my reaction to a wave I genuinely like more than anything in the last 7 months and spent several hundred on.

Ya'know, these "Thank you posts" are kinda self-masturbatory. I miss when we got lore as well, that actually filled out more info about the drop. Ehh, yeah, I miss the lore too, but whatever, let him say thank you, it's not hurting anyone. At least they're usually not totally useless posts, they either tell us packages have been shipped out, or mark some big milestone, or contain some funny little story from Matt's youth or something.

On a side note, does anyone have a tan Roboforce figure they'd sell me?

It's a cool line that will continue for a while but it's definitely not expanding the way it was from 2009-2012. The production numbers and sister companies that come and go happen in waves of strong stretches and then drop offs, but the brand as a whole and the community have shrunk.

I really wish people would stop saying this and using it as an example of Glyos' downfall. Matt has clearly stated that he has increased production numbers, and this makes good sense as it allows people with busy lives to make orders at their leisure instead of having to panic over showing up the minute they drop. Do you know how many drops I missed back in the day because stuff only stuck around for 30 minutes and I had class or work?

These days, drops insta-selling out is a bad metric for how the line is doing.
