He was a silly old timey cartoon character so I am not sure what irks you about him.
By classic cartoon standards he was even fairly well developed.

Personally I think the idea of realistic cartoon figures is fun and creative.

It is. It also makes for a unique collectible. I LOVE this idea of Popeye. He looks like a real person, YET retains all his exaggerated cartoonish attributes. It's perfect. I hope they do more. Just imagine if we got like Elmer Fudd, Betty Boop, Fred Flinstone, George Jetson. It would be amazing.

Like I said before, I'm getting three of them.

That's how I feel about a lot of Mezcos, all the redesigns mixed in with faithful adaptations feels unnecessary. They've made so may freaking batman figures with more planned, yet there's not a single decent semi-modern comic Batman they've done, like Jim Lee's Hush look. Even their standard "sovereign Knight Batman " is a redesign.

It just hit me why Popeye’s forearms are so huge. It’s cause he’s constantly crushing tin plated steel cans of spinach that his forearm muscles are disproportionately developed. He’s probably got enough grip strength to crush Brutus’s skull even without his fix of spinach.

I know, but Popeye is a very expressive character that is normally in drastically different situations.

I'd like it if they acknowledged that he is also a really nice guy but then I remember that they might go and do an Olive Oyl and I'd rather they just keep this Popeye in an unending meaningless fight with Bluto.
