Matt was perfectly right to sue infowars for profiting from his original artwork but for the most part, his original idea has evolved into something different, almost entirely. Which comes with it's negatives but also a lot of positives.
Boy's Club wasn't a popular comic series prior to the popularity of Pepe and it's fan made edits and content. Very few artists get the luxury of fan-made content bringing them notoriety. While Matt may disagree with pol, the effects on him as a professional artist that's trying to make a living are overwhelmingly positive. Which I'm sure he realizes, but keeps up a very anti-pol facade to cleanse himself of all the negative "alt right" publicity.
That's just my view on it. As a graphic designer, I'd be thrilled if any of my originals became mainstream memes under any context so long as it could be traced back to me. Maybe Matt values the past unanimous yet small public opinion of his comic over the potential income, publicity / fanbase and opportunity that came with 4chan's use of Pepe.
