When buying children's toys for yourself at a real store, with a real cashier, with real normal people around, buy the cheapest wrapping paper and bows too. It'll look like you're buying a present, and are a decent normal person.

I'm normie as one can be and nobody gives a shit. When I went to buy both Movie Masterpiece Bumblebee and Prime at TRU, I just went straight up to whomever was working and asked that I was looking for those figures. In one instance I was asked if it was for me and I just said normally and confidently that yeah, those were for me as I was into buying Transformers, and sparked a convo between the workers and me. Just act normal and don't sperg out.

Even if by some chance someone does think it's dumb, they'll immediately forget about you and never think about it again. Any single customer doesn't matter.

I've been a regular at a local store for years and years, and the cutie cashiers don't even notice that the name i told them to call me by isn't the name on my credit card.

Hell, at a coffee place they know what i normally order, but they don't even know what i drink, despite drinking their shit at a table usually with someone else.

They plain do notice what you're buying, muchless care... unles they're flirting. Then they take too much interest.

This. I worked at toys r us back in 2008 and could easily tell based one what a person asked that they were buying for themselves. “Do you have the bandai, etc.” if they mention brands, they’re collectors.
I usually ask about their collection and have a good conversation going until someone from upper management yells for my help over the walkie talkies. It was a good time

It's cool that my coworker is also a collector who goes for more high end stuff like Hot Toys, particularly Marvel stuff (he's a Senior Job Captain just promoted to Project Manager) so we talk about what we are buying next. Some people roll their eyes but we are social, competent, and confident to only get light teasing in our office but no one cares what we do with our money or spare time. Unfortunately for my coworker, he got married last year and his wife made him put his collection at home in storage for space issues.

Look, I make the rounds in my local shopping mall once per week, I hit every store in there that sells toys, employees there know me and they know what I'm into, they even let me know without asking when new merchandise that I may be interested in has just come out and all is well.

I'm not going to pretend i'm a badass impervious to opinions, some things really hold on to me, for instance, i always feel awkward if i'm poorly dressed and a cute girl passes by. I'm always afraid some professor, collegue etc will read something i wrote and find my work useless shit (which, more often than i care to admit, is my own opinion about it). They can think of me as a pathetic weirdo all the they want, in the end of the day i will be the one getting to have fun with a little piece of something i love and they will be the ones passing on the same useless judgment they fear getting from others.

I was initially pretty nervous about buying toys in person as an adult but the first time I did I ended up having a short conversation with the clerk about how cool the character I was buying a figure of is. So ever since then it asked I've just been open about it. For the most part nobody cares and sometimes it even leads to a decent interaction.

I don't get why people have an issue with this, I have anxiety but the most autism I ever had was walking into a target store at 8pm dead quiet and asked a worker where the transformers were and asked IF IT WAS OK walking around the toy aisle, he laughed at me (as he should) and I simply responded "well I am dressed in all black I look like a shop lifter" (also recent incident at the time where a father was pegged as a pedophile for taking pics of star wars toys with his son in another aisle and some soccer mom went autistic so I was being maybe too cautious and tried not to mention this fact so people didn't suspect that from me).

These days its just a matter of walking in, grabbing what I want (and I will examine paint apps on literal kids toys for up to 10-20mins), head to check out, and pay, if any delays I might make small talk saying I'm a collector but not the kind who keeps shit in their boxes.

Got a discount from a toy store even because I came in my work uniform despite the fact I didn't work in that shopping center, what a bonus that was for asking "hay are those the NEW TRANSFORMERS!?" when they were just opening fresh cartons.

Maybe I'm a little autistic but I say why be so conscious, its not like they can ban you for autism unless you open the boxes and try to smell the paint off the damn things

The employees dont care specifically what you buy, just that you arent having any trouble finsing stuff. They usually ask if you need any help, and if you do they go out of the way to really help you. I buy more than half my stuff from stores and go to stores many times without buying things though (waiting for restocks). Never had anyone say anything negative or questionable. In fact, anytime anyone has said something its been positive. Also it helps to be curteous because chances are most people they encounter are not.
