I was in Target today browsing the Lego aisle and stumbled across some of the Elves sets. The sets actually look really good. Bought the goblin king dragon set and the build was fun and the dragon looks great! Rearranged my display to make room for it.

Why dont more people talk about the Elves sets? They all looked pretty neat.

Everything except the head looks amazing. The shield tile feels like a real copout, and the crown looks too large.

White Lego bricks turn yellowish over time even if not exposed to sunlight, because the plastic has bromine added to it to act as a fire retardant and bromine turns brown as it breaks down, which causes the white plastic to look yellowish. This process is different from UV damage caused by sunlight exposure.

What I want to know (not that anon who asked) is if modern Legos have bromine added.

One of my TRUs (Canada) still have the Joker balloon set and a bunch of other ancient stuff, possibly the carbonite chamber as well.

I'm hoping to get the SW bounty hunter set and the balloon one on sale, if possible. Did I miss my chance for either opportunity?

Also, what are some good and cheap sets out these days? (under $30, preferably under $20: bounty hunters are $16 iirc)

Technic is hard to make MOCs with. Making something that's both functional and good-looking takes planning, insight and (typically) a lot of experimentation and rebuilding.

Collecting waifigs is easier, so that gets talked about more.

I haven't seen TRU discount Lego sets for more than 5% off ever since the clearance sales started, and they probably won't get any better until right before the place shuts down entirely. You might have to wait a bit longer.

TRU Canada luckily got a bidder, the only clearance they'll be doing is for stuff in the next wave. What usually happens with Lego though? These products have been on shelves for at least a year.

That's pretty much what I like as well, tinkering with the parts that are available until it works.

And I get what you mean about the looks. Personally, I think Technic works best when combined with standard bricks to finish off the look.

I think its a good move to make smaller price sets, so its easier to buy it for kids. But you are limited with stones, because you have these characters that will mostly sell the sets, so you have to come up with ok builds that are not too expensive but have a character or variation to sell it.

Chima is/was kino. The builds were good and the plot was good, just the execution lacked.

In my headcannon, after they defeated the ice tribes, chima gets flooded. This enables or attracts new tribes, a sea tribe, maybe using atlantis sea creatures, and insect tribes, maybe use space alien insect molds. They are like the air ships from ninjago and seek to mine chi for their leader. Maybe we learn that the nomad tribes are tribes that use airships for travel between different floating isles or to the land below.
Than in a later season we learn that their leader is a dragon tribe, which either enforces other tribes that are evil, like the sea or insect tribes, or enslaves the tribes that wont sell/give their chi, like the nomads tribes and a dinosaur tribe.

Actually my battle cars set is missing a couple 2 axles, but every single sticker is perfectly applied to correct parts. An even more extreme example was when I once found a Spyrius robo guard that had every single printed piece and magnet, but was missing two 2x2 bricks. Ha!

Chima was one of the best themes Lego ever did. It was pretty smart of them to introduce so many factions in just the first wave. When I was a kid, you'd build them up over years, but here? They look similar since they're mostly based on the same model, from the 1995 movie.

Brickmania tried to replicate the movie prop.
I like the movie just fine, but I'm not the kind of builder to copy every line and rivet to the micrometer. Instead, I'm more inspired by the comics, where Tank Girl's tank:
-Has way poppier colors.
-Pretty much changes design on a per-panel basis.
-Can actually, you know, move and shoot.

So we both tried to do different things with the source material. Brickmania is the train nerd that uses calipers to get everything close to some sort of platonic ideal, where I just want to replicate the hog-wild FUCK YOU I'M AS LOUD AS I WANT TO BE attitude of the thing.

I'm not saying one approach is better than the other. Except that I am.

With regular racecars, having just a little negative camber can be an advantage in handling.

So, like with all car mods, there are some who take it entirely too far- just for the aesthetic of it. Since cars were never meant to be driven this way it's inefficient, causes uneven wear on tires, and may in fact be blindingly dangerous.

And just because it's such a dumb thing to do to a car, I thought I'd give it a go.

On the other hand, if practicality was the only concern about a car, we'd all be driving Volvos.

The Lego Ninjago Movie is definitely the best in my opinion, followed by the original Lego Movie. I was disappointed by Batman. The action in TLNM isn't as ADHD, the environments are beautiful, the humor was never cringy or trying too hard, and the story themes are great. Ninjago, Legends of Chima, Friends, Elves, Monster Fighters, and Nexo Knights are all patrician themes. Check 'em out as well as Creator's releases since then. Creator is getting better every year. Lego is more popular I'd say than in the 2000s, but they've outsourced to factories in China and other countries that don't have as strict quality controls, so pieces break occasionally just from sitting there. Brown is the worst for some reason.

Unikitty on the James Bond bi-section table gave me a good laugh.
This theme really grew on me. Where most juniors sets feel like sub-par substitutions of their regular themes (but with prints!) These feel more designed with the younger kid audience in mind a priori.
The builds are simple but feel more rounded and finished. The colours look nice across the board too.
Yet I think younger kids would feel more inclined to build the characters new things to fiddle with in a crude more blocky style. The more complex sets of today might feel too complex for kids to make them want or feel comfortable to take apart, or feel like they won't be able to do builds on par with those.
Creator also puts emphasis on rebuilding with pieces itself with its multiple builds, but I think the lack of characters gives not enough context for kids to care as much, especially with a lot of emphasis on one or more good builds through instructions. Those creator sets feel more like modelkits to them
They feel a lot like the Freestyle sets, but with more established characters. (I do really like Freestyle, the more established characters make it harder for kids to build their own people with these. That’s my only gripe. But the characters do look fun)

So are there any good technic sets out there? I'm not interested in any of the System sets they have right now and I've kinda stopped following Lego after Bionicle G2, mostly because I'm not interested in most licensed sets, the few original themes they do have don't interest me personally, and the Star Wars figures are ugly and too expensive.

I've never really had many Technic sets and I'm considering getting one, since the building style looks more complex.

Let me share what I have found out...

I have not seen any newer Lego yellow as much as the older stuff and have had some newer white bricks that i left out over the winter in a window sill that gets direct morning sun. It discolored a little but nowhere like the old stuff. So perhaps there is still bromine added but not as much.

I tested this because I was curious myself as I had been soaking some yellowed bricks to whiten them back up. And yes that works and works great!
Anyways that's when that thought crossed my mind.. Do newer bricks yellow? I tested on a standard 1x2, a 2x2, a 2x4, and a 4x4 plate. I did this with both older white and newer white and the older white browned bad but not all parts equally which I found odd where the newer stuff just hinted at a little yellow.

Lego has a good relationship with Universal Pictures, and has done sets for Peter Jack-related movies before.

Therefore, I my unlikely prediction/desire is that Lego will produce Mortal Engines sets in winter 2018.

I'm not suggesting a CITY subtheme. I'm suggesting a renewal of a classic theme, that would be it's own thing. The original Adventurers had good guys and bad guys. Ninjago and Nexo Knights have/had good guys and bad guys. So too could this.
And keeping with the fact that it's a kids toy, the bad guys (who's evil goal isn't to kill the animals, just to lock them up in a private zoo, for their pleasure) will be forever destined to lose. Lose because the grumpy Tasmanian Devil chased them off, or the Bengal Tiger frightened them. Or maybe just because the Orangutan threw a banana at them and the slipped and skidded off into the jungle.

To be fair, this time it was more in the line of "why you buy this small kiddie shit instead of bigger, complex ones" but still. It is since the outer lip on the pins will remain squished inside the antistud of the brick. Technic holes have this little extra ring of gappage around them for that lip to 'click' back into place and lock it in.

Umbra is just such an anomaly of a set. Came out of nowhere, both in the story and as a set. One of the weirdest color schemes and designs in a series of weird designs. Then here comes Mr Roller blading, flashing sword wielding, outdated gimmick user himself.

The short version is that back in December I got a minifig four-pack that had a damaged hippie hair, and Lego customer service created and canceled the replacement order twice because the only other versions of the hippie hair are CMF pieces so they can't access them from the replacement service (the reps I spoke to those times didn't know they were CMF exclusives so the system let them place the order but then canceled it automatically). I asked if it would be OK to wait until the white spoopy hair is released and get one of those as the replacement and the rep said yes. She also sent me the spooky hair in dark brown "just to tide you over in the meantime" because she felt bad that the replacement order had been canceled more than once.

Also her coworker sitting next to her offered to replace it with the Ninjago rocker hippie hair OUT OF HIS OWN PERSONAL COLLECTION.
