Who collects Beast Wars here? Favorite figures? Least favorites? Pleasant surprises? Disappointments?

Currently debating on if I should go for Rampage or just fill out my roster of smaller figures first. I love crabs and the character, but that's a lot for one figure with that much kibble.

A lot of my favorites are basic class too, actually. Airhammer in particular is probably my favorite overall.

Razorclaw is one of the best figures in a line of great figures. Powerpinch is great too. Most of the later basics are great, and even some of the earlier flipformers like Iguanus and Insecticon. Drill-bit is regarded as one of the worst figures in the line, but even he's not that bad.

I'm collecting the Cyborg Beasts, which I consider to have turned a number of weaker molds into straight-up the best molds in the line. My only issue is finding a reasonably priced Gigastorm, since I have Thrustor.

Dirgegun was the first I picked up and he's great, but his undercarriage in beast mode has some oddities to it that makes me feel like they didn't really plan out some of the retools they used on the transition from Waspinator.

I'll pick Transmetal Optimus Primal, but only because his chrome parts is prone to chipping. other than that I still considered him one of my favorites because of how fun he is.

RM Lio Convoy. I'm never been a fan of asymmetrical design bot, (buying him just to completing the Beast Wars faction leaders.) but RM Lio Convoy is not only surprisingly good looking, but also filled with many gimmicks that make fell in love with him that he still became one of my most favorites Beast Wars/Transformers toys until now.

>Disappointments ?
Maybe MP Optimus Primal, because I was expecting a superior Optimus Primal toy, yet the complex transformation leave a lot scratches on the "decal" furs and painted chest. Also unlike his Ultra class and Robot Masters version, he can't store his swords on gorilla mode. It still a good figure but I mostly put him on display rather than fiddling with him out of fear that I will scratch the furs. (hence why RM Primal is still my most favorite Primal.)

The first one.
The head of the generic cat has a curve by the neck that fits perfectly when you point it down and push it towards the robot's torso. Every reviewer I've seen puts the cat head forward giving it a huge unwieldy chest.

I get why people like that but I wish they weren't quite so blocky. The sleek, rounded aesthetics of BW set it apart from G1 and gave it its own visual identity, even if you don't give them organic beast wars I'd like the beast modes to at least look different from G1 style, blockier beasts. At least make them more Zoids-like.

A lot of Beast Wars figures were known for having really poor transformations in the actual instructions and display images.

Only that it's not.
The show/comics design has the top of the head and most of the face of the cheetah facing forward; but facing forward here is in a sense is not the same kind of facing forward one normally thinks, what is at the front of the chest is actually the "top" of the head in part because their features are arranged almost horizontally.

I did remember Cheetor himself incorrectly, but Tigatron's beast face DOES face forward in the show. And that mold's beast mode always looked like it was built like a tiger than a cheetah to me, so Tigatron always felt like the more 'official' owner of that mold even though Cheetor was the 'main' one.

My problem with how it looks with the face looking down is that it just completely sticks off. In the show it fit down into the chest cavity, but with the toy it's just a piece sitting there looking down, with a big open space in the top of it.

Facing forward it sticks off a bit more awkwardly, but it at least doesn't have a big opening or just look like it didn't transform properly. At least for me.

Only the original Hasbro red/blue/green eyes Cheetor and Hasbro's Tigatron have the ability to fold down the beast head all the way. All of Takara's versions, all the Cheetor rereleases, and Shadow Panther have the remolded piece that prevents it. However, it's super easy to sand it down to get the same effet, that's what I did to my Shadow Panther.

Probably the best example of the flipformer concept. That's the one I would reccommend to anyone who only wanted a single flipformer, though Iguanus is pretty good too, even if he doesn't much resemble an actual frill-necked lizard. I prefer to think of him as a Yellow Spotted Lizard from Holes, which has the added bonus of making him seem more threatening.

I've always known how to do it, but if you DO lock the shoulders in place, his arms are stuck staight to his side...if you want to pose his arms at all they need to be unclipped, at least that's how my figure is.

I still have this motherfucker. He hangs out on my coffee table and I play with him whenever I have long loading times with video games. He's so simple, but fun and well constructed. I mean, I've had him since I was a kid when Beast Wars first came out and he still work's like the day I got him. Flip transform works perfectly, wings stay in place, ponders still move but are firm in place, all joints stay in place. Totally solid.

I wish I kept all the Beast Wars figures I had. I didn't have a ton, but I had a decent number, like 10 or so. The one I miss the most is my Transmetal Cheetor, but I loved my Transmetal Tarantula

The only of Beast Wars figure I still have is Transmetal Megatron. I have him posed on my desk in my room. Maybe I took good care of him, but his gold bits and metallic purple never broke or chipped. His right arm joint is pretty loose now though

Yeah, I always faced his head down, which is how I remember it being shown in the commercials and on the card. It sticks out way too far though, although I prefer it to the mistransformation, which ends up blocking Cheetor's face.

The way the top of the bug head became his pecs was brilliant. My only complaint with the flipformers is they can be a pain to stand. Ankle tilts would have made these little guys almost perfect.

Translucent plastics are horrible, especially back then when they sued cheaper grade stuff. Beast Machines deluxe Primal was known to have thumbs snap off or limbs fall off, and ultra Nightscream could crumble into pieces from simply existing.

Toy companies also do not give a remote shit if their stuff breaks 5-10 years later because they assume most kids have tossed them long before that.

What do you think the best overall year/series for the toyline was? I feel a lot would say late 97/98 due to the transmetals, but I think the peak was 97 with the second year of organic beasts. It feels like all the basics were generally great toys, the deluxes had more convincing alt-modes, the megas were all generally fun even if they all ended up shelfwarmers, and the combiners were cool additions. The transmetals are great, too, but they simplified a lot of the cool engineering that was being developed up til then. Even with the "third mode" the transformations were generally simpler. I feel like G1 purists who like the robot beasts sort of overrate the Transmetals overall.

In fact, I'd even say I prefer the Fuzors the older I get, because the better fuzors seemed to keep the more interesting engineering and design that the Transmetals didn't have.

I have a strange soft spot for Transmetal II. There's no TM2 design I outright dislike or feel is just a complete waste of space, I love the asymmetrical design and how unique they got, and I love the cybernetic/organic hybrid look they have going. Also, Spark Crystals were fucking cool as hell.

The TMIIs were a bit awkward, but had some of the most interesting transformations of the line.With that(and to a degree, BWNeo, it seems likeHasTak was pushing new ways to make the same basic beast body shapes transform. I think Cheetor is the only quadraped of the TMIIs were both his limbs become the same corresponding robot limb, with BW haters always cry about. Tigerhawk and Lio Convoy, for example, are both big cats but transform completely differently.

I think what really wins me over with TM2 is that they really ARE probably among the most unique lines in Beast Wars, if not the most unique. And like I said, they're the only line that doesn't have a single figure I really, really dislike. There's a few I find kind of meh, like Stinkbomb and Optimus Minor, but nothing I hate and a lot that I love.

I mean... look at Scourge. I can see why somebody would find that thing ugly, but he is REALLY unique and nothing like really anything else in the series. And if you like that sort of thing, he looks really cool.

It's the fragility that makes it shit. The Cyberbee is held in place by a spring and the whole area is made of translucent plastic, so it's only a matter of time before the catch breaks and the claw won't stay on, making him basically useless.

Not using it is what makes it become a problem. It's held in place by a translucent catch, the idea being you release the catch and the bee launches. Because it's constantly stressing the catch it eventually gives way, causing the bee to always launch. It is possible to get the claw to hold without the catch, but it's extremely hard and it's more hair trigger than Retrax.

Shame. What's worse is that mold got redeco'd twice and both are extremely rare Botcon exclusives. Sucks, because one of them (pictured) doesn't look like it uses any clear plastic at all so it'd probably be strong, and it looks pretty fucking cool.

Because the characters in the show had to be designed early in the show's process, so they had to have designed based on the earlier toys. with each new subset of toys there's a design learning curve, so the eariler toys can sometimes be lower quality compared to the later ones(see: the RID2015 line).

that actually ties into one of the more neat things about the Beast Wars line, thanks to the show establishing how big Beast Era Cybertronians are in comparison to the Proto-Humans(and to a lesser extent how they compare to their G1 ancestors), if one applies that scale roughly to the toyline they end up being pretty in scale with GI Joe figures

To this day I can't find a major flaw with this figure. Even compared to other BW G1's he has pretty solid likeness to the show. He's sturdy, has a shitload of actually fun gimmicks, can store everything including all four missiles, has a very fluid and practical transformation without having to be a flip/shellformer, has minimal kibble in either form that isn't specifically used to enhance that form, and has possibly the best articulation of any BW figure.

And this is just a personal thing, but I'm glad the original release (and a repaint or two) gave him the face plate instead of the mouth. Both are show accurate so that's not an issue either way, but I just always thought the lips looked really awkward and made him ugly in the show.

Grimlock only has some minor damage:
The peg that snaps the Tail together and the peg/articulation in one of the raptor arms broke. I managed to fix the raptor arm, but never bothered with the tail and usually taped it together whe I had him in beast mode. As you can see, l never had any issues with the gold parts, and he survived a shit ton of playtime because Dinobot is one of my favorite characters.

I like Beast Wars as a concept but transforming them rarely ever struck a chord with me. So many seemed to revolve around standing something upright. I had a few when I was a kid, and I liked the show though.

I might hit up eBay for a few of them. Any recommendations?

This bad boy was the pride of my collection as a kid. All three of them were cool on their own, then they turn into this massive super badass dude who towered over every other figure I had. Good memories.

We're talking about all four limbs remaining in the same position between both modes. Terragator's hind legs are part of the weapon in robot mode.

I didn't mean it so literally; there's just usually something a little unsatisfying to me about something with four limbs turning into something else with four limbs. But I will gladly concede I might just not have explored the line deep enough. I'm sure there's good stuff in there, even among figures that fit that description.

Try out Beast Wars Neo Cohrada... he's a cobra. Like... that's about as far from "four limbs into four limbs" as you'll get.

Another cool example of a neat transformation is Scarem. Pincers become robot arms, and two of the insect legs on each side merge to form robot legs.

Shame Silverbolt (the eagle) is one of the worst GPS figures in the entire line, though. Even the recolor used gold plastic.

At least Injector has full articulation. Retrax can't even really use his arms, it's just all hugging.

But I would give Injector at least second or third worst for sure... though a lot of the Neo line sucked pretty hard. Fucking Long Rack.

I find Sky Shadow and Noctorro underrated, though Sky Shadow looks a LOT better in his Japanese repaint. And it's tragic that Torca suffers such terrible GPS while Elephorca is almost impossible to get.

Airhammer might be my favorite Scout Class in the entire BW line, though.

But that robot mode...

Only problem I have with Terragator is the beast head is upside down in robot mode with no way to fix it.

Honestly Optimus was pretty accurate in turns of size (a LITTLE big but not too bad.) The issue was more on Rhinox and Dinobot. They were huge in the show and they only made their figures deluxes. Both should have been Mega, easily.

And Scorponok and Polar Claw were pretty close in size to Optimus. He was bigger, but given he's the leader he should be a little bigger than them anyhow.

the robot mode was decent , headsculpt too, had a grappling hook gimmick ( i extended the line)

I didn't even like it as a kid. The show accurate head looks terrible because it has zero paint detail so it just looks lumpy and like it has weird ears, the arms are stubby and awkward, it has the same "bug leg" problem others do (not a problem with this figure exclusively but it doesn't help it), the legs were awful, the beast mode didn't look like a spider but instead some weird ass ant, the figure gets loose really easily, and the grapple (while a cool idea) always gets in the way because of the string.

I just think such a great character deserved a lot better, and then they literally fuck over Blackarachnia by just making it a repaint?

At least the Grimlock figure had the excuse of not being a show character so for all we know he'd be similar to Dinobot, and his colors were superior to Dinobot's anyhow... though why Grimlock wasn't a Megatron repaint I have no idea.

The fuck are you talking about? As far as we know there were never plans of releasing a female looking Blackarachnia toy before the Transmetal 2 one, it was always intended as a Tarantulas repaint. The fact that Mainframe changed the toy design for the show means nothing.

I only had a KO of Tarantulas and it was made of this weird kind of hard but flexible plastic that somehow kept balljoints functional because it had pretty good friction.
Was the real one made with a similar material or was it the same brickhouse plastic the rest of beast wars used?

Now I regret dropping the toys with Beast Machines because Cheetor getting upgraded was kind of a big deal in my playtime story since he was maximal commander by the time I stopped adding Beast Wars figures back then. Night Slash Cheetor would be a great figure to follow up, despite of the shoulders, but the fucking price gouging on my country is insane; that one figure goes for about 40 dollars.

Speaking of Cheetors, I was thinking of getting this guy but to repurpose it as another cat bad guy that is not Ravage. Any ideas?

You can call him Transmetal Shadow Panther. The colors don't match perfectly, but most of the transmetals didn't keep the same color palette as the original anyway.
