If you have / can afford the original Victory Leo, the MP Star Saber was designed so that the original Leo toy could merge with him as well. Vintage Leo is actually pretty reasonable loose. I've seen it on ebay for within $50 the price of Simba. YMMV.
I've heard people complain about the lack of paint, but he's very primary colored on the show and the original toy, so it kinda works for him. I'm not sure what more people wanted. Especially when you hear the horror stories about Megatron paint chipping. I'm actually okay having a toy that doesn't shred paint upon exposure to air.
Ultimately, he works as a Masterpiece. He works as a big fun toy. He's a fraction the cost of the original.
You could wait for the WFC Star Saber in 2019, but we all know that it won't be as nice as this.
