CPS soakers tend to cost more and they started to warm shelves because parents are in the mindset of 'a water gun is just a water gun and why should I pay thirty bucks for something that squirts water and only gets used on a few days out of the year?' this leads to retailers not stocking a seasonal item that might take up shelf space that changes with seasons.
Eventually Hasbro ownership of the CPS patent ran out and they didn't renew a couple years ago, this led to a hopeful resurgance of CPS style guns by other companies, but lack of interest sees to have caused that to fall flat.
I can't look up the names of all those other company elastic bladder guns ATM, but I can give one name, the water warriors Gargantua from two years back.
These new elastic bladder guns do NOT match up to the old CPS guns, especially not the 2000, but they are leagues better then what Hasbro puts out now. He'll Hasbro super soakers do not even use the original super soaker tech that makes it a super soaker. Just bigger versions of the tech in a squirt pistol, so no pumping the gun to pressurize the shot.
I have yet to take the time myself but it should be possible to replace the bladder in the newer CPS style guns to give them more firing time.
