Generally I am very resentful about reboots having nothing to do with the source material but share the same name, but G2 is so great that I don't mind the least.
Master Pohatu has his pros and cons, but with a little modding (raise shoulders and lengthen legs) he becomes god tier. Thigh high boots, fashionable asymmetry in the arms, beautiful dark orange that looks brilliant in the sunlight and goes with gold. Minimalist armor design that doesn't hinder him like the others (though that's a con if you're into ceremonial or loaded looks).
And his character was great too. A silent-water-runs-deep aussie with super strength who rides tornadoes.
If only Bushworld Adventures had come out at the time /biog/ had aussie fever. We'd have such fun.

Anyone willing to test how this looks on a toa mata? Essentially attaching it to a ball joint on top of their neck. Mainly I want neck articulation while preserving the gear function, and without making the neck too long. (I'd try myself but I don't have the piece. Not my image)

I guess the fanbase just felt insulted at the sheer idea of av-toran built final sets so they tried to disregard that altogether and touted the idea that there would had been titans.

Sad thing is, most lego Themes don't end with a bang, they just wither away with a lackluster wave.

I remember people speculating STARS would be a hall of fame wave commemorating a near-decade of bonkles.
The keetorange rahkshi had the potential to sell like hot cupcakes among the fans. An army builder and source of head and back shells that people had recently learned to use thanks to the japs. People would at least buy that to pimp out their Toa Mata Nui or build a titan of their own.
I was disappointed when I opened the box and found the pieces weren't like the old ones. Still a nice Rahkshi though.

Summer 2016 definitely looked rushed compared to 2015 (especially Umarak) but we don't have any indication we were supposed to get 5 more sets. 2016 and 2017 might've always been supposed to be 17-18 sets in total like 2015 was.

I still feel that the elemental beasts could have worked if the designers had just made them dual-elemental. It would have fit with the theme of mixing the elements being evil. It's a damned shame that at the end of the day they were nothing more than very blatantly recycled Invasion From Below designs with tweaked Skeleton Army features welded to them. They feel like such a rush job, as if only a few days were spent designing them.

A lot of things. It was the first set of its size that wasn't a villain (discounting combiners), most of the Mata squad can fit inside it (though it's ostensibly designed for Tahu and needs tweaking to accommodate some of the others), it paired nicely with the Bahrag Twins, has a robotic head for "autopilot", contains an awesome alt model... I could go on. It's just really well designed and very multifunctional. The only real flaws of the set are that it can't fit all six Toa Mata (Which is understandable given their proportions) and the lack of knee articulation. Other than that, it's more or less a perfect set.

Artistically it helps with ease of visual understanding for both the one drawing and the one who's looking at it. It's also quite difficult to pull body language or expression that doesn't look stupid and half assed if you don't go that route. I don't like it much either, but hey, you get what you get.

I love krana so very much. They were complex, there were eight different designs, had a different design tone, nicely contrasting colours and fit snuggly on heads unlike the masks who kept a lot of distance from the face. A few of them vaguely resembled faces too. When I first watched the ads I thought the Bohrok were armors that unfolded around or combined with the toa sets.

Actual artfag here. Do a lot of drawing, including bonkle fanart.

Personally, I've got no qualms with it...depending. I really like the MoL designs, but there's a lot of other mask-mouth integration that looks great. Some artists do a great job.

I'm not a big fan of Demitsoru's work, though. Goes too far to the organic side for my taste.

As for design, while expressiveness can be communicated without a mouth, it's a lot easier with one. Saying the artist is just "uncreative" is not only cruel, but forgets that mouths are one of the main things humans look for on a human face, and the reason they're so useful in making expressions. You can change everything about a drawing - tone, look, emotive response, etc - just by changing the mouth.

And not only that, but they really help balance the face, moreso than some of the standard "mouth placeholder" looks I've seen on some bonkle art.

How does one create a very expressive face that also lacks a mouth? The comics generally follow the "angry or bored" look with occasional instances of dull surprise.

The main one I can think of is MNOG, but even then I'd prefer MoL mouths to that, just from an artistic standpoint.

The more expressive a character is, the better they generally look. While a mouthless character might look "cool," they are usually only going to have those two to three expressions

See, the art's fine, but I think it could look a lot better with expressions. Without looking at the expressions, you kind of get the feel of a mystic storytelling. But once you start examining the face, you realize everyone looks just...blank. Maybe a little...sad? Scared? Bored? It's hard to tell because they're faces are just solid.

Again, the art's great, but it'd benefit from stylization and expression.

Still would be better with expressions. It's the difference between Transformers: Energon and Transformers Animated. Energon's fine, I guess. They have mouths that emote. But I'd rather watch Animated any day, because they're far better looking and expression.

Pretty good art! Love the lighting. Though, again, the expression is ambiguous. Great painting all around.

Here's some examples that I like from a myriad of artists I either follow or could care less about, starting from what I like least in the upper left and most in the bottom right. So let's start.

Top left: I actually like the expressiveness, and while the mouth bridges on too human, it's creatively integrated into a Huna Kanohi, making it pretty inventive and hyper-expressive. So while it's pretty, well, almost silly, it really gets across expressions and looks okay overall.

Top right: Actually from one of Demitsoru's older pieces before he started just mapping mask traits onto human faces (which looks terrible), this one has the mouth sort of in the space it would be on the mask. While I'd like more framing around the mouth, it's still nice and expressive, and not super intrusive, especially given the color palette.

Bottom left: Takua. This is just the standard "organic mouth framed by the usual mask," nearing the MoL designs where the mask, while expressive, frames a more organic mouth.

Bottom right: A more rigid version of the MoL designs. I like these, even though they often come off as a little too robotic and can lack in expressiveness compared to the three before.

Basically, I like expressiveness, and while you can pull it off without mouths, I sort of prefer mouths. They not only add an extra layer of expressiveness and visual communication, but also add more to the "bio" side of the characters.

I understand why people don't like a lot of mouths (again, the whole "mapping masks onto human faces" thing needs to die), but I don't get the absolute hatred for it and why it's considered "uncreative" when it sometimes leads to really cool stylizations of masks and characters.

I hate it when people do this. Taking a design's cons and claiming they are iconic design characteristics. G1 had long-ass arms that looked terrible. Just because something isn't human doesn't automatically give every bad feature a free pass. And the arms being freakish long wasn't intentional either, because it was fixed later.

I hate art like this because it doesn't even look like they're wearing masks, which is such an important part of Bionicle. I'd have no idea that the top left was meant to be wearing a Huna (or even that it was meant to be a toa/matoran) if you hadn't said so, and I still don't know what the top right is meant to be. I only know bottom left is a Pakari because I recognize Takua, but that picture makes him look like fucking Homer Simpson. If I was unfamiliar with Bionicle I could probably tell that they were meant to be robots but I'd have absolutely no idea that those were meant to be masks on top of a separate head.

I feel like if you really can't get a Bionicle to portray emotion using eyes and body language then putting eye brows on top of the mask is just about acceptable. But I disagree that the examples you posted are all that different from 'mapping masks onto human faces.' The masks are rigid, metallic masks. They shouldn't move. I mean, by definition a mask covers up someone's face: it is not actually their face. Just smashing human facial expressions on top of the masks is a bizarre rejection of the source material. Consider that always wearing a mask is something that could set the matoran races apart from everyone else: there's a dozen other races who can all emote, but matoran always have their faces covered. Make a big deal out of it. Give them exaggerated eyes and gestures. They've got big glowing eyes: eyes are one of the most expressive parts of the human face. It's why Disney and nips give their characters great big fucking eyes, not giant cartoony mouths.

If you're going to give them mouths then at least do it like the movies: small mouths framed by a larger mask; overlapping slats that form lips; glowing lights behind a grill. But don't give them big fat dick sucking lips or a Homer beard to make it stand out.

I saw people were critiquing stylistic decisions in the thread and decided to sketch something to model everyone's tastes off of. I decided to make the visor on A expressive rather than having to move the mask around. The intent was to keep expression in the general area of the eye while still keeping a solid appearance for the actual mask. B was me experimenting in humanisation without actually going overboard, as some artists tend to do.

Anyone with an Exo Toa here? I wnna know the condition of these pieces on your copies. My reasoning is that I wanna buy one but i just noticed the entire torso assembly and hip assembly is only connected to the legs by one axle. Is the weight too much stress on it? Do the foot pedals help alleviate some of the weight?

Like what the G2 "Nuva" did, but not as terrible. Maybe for molds like Kopaka you could give his eye mod some gunmetal or silver, so the bleed from it makes it look like he had the tech infused with his face like some sort of mystical magical Borg.

(Also I just realized Kopaka's mask was inspired by the Borg.)

My normal multi color methods are only two-color. Was just experimenting.

Not sure if you've seen, but I can cut a section of a piece off, put it back in a mold, and replace the missing section with a new color to basically do what you're saying.

I also want to note that my instagram's name has been changed to "socketballmasks" for consistency so that finding me on multiple platforms (just tumblr and flickr right now) isn't confusing.

Hell yes, I remember I had almost all parts to build that giant dragon, however I was missing a few critical parts.

So I requested spare parts through the lego website by claiming they were not included with the purchase. I did this several times throughout a lazy summer until I managed to get all of the missing parts required to build the dragon.

The result was way beyond awesome.
Too bad my mom sold my entire bonkle collection (Storage box filled to the brim with hundreds of sets) for a measly hundred in the process of an ugly & abrupt divorce without even asking me.

Thabk you. Just wanted to be sure and I wasn't feeling like trusting myself and only myself. 25 units seems the max that Tahu can go with about a millimeter of space between his head and the ceiling of the box. But, I figured put a way to bring the shins down one unit and reduce the ankle pistons to a 4l axle as opposed to the 6l axle, and still have a 2l piece of silver tubing on it. This seems to lean forward at the same angle as before, but with the extra unit of height removed and the torso clicked back a notch or two he should have almost an inch between his mask and the ceiling.

I bought one mask in matte hoping to buy a partner in time but now I gotta go with polished. I wanna just go back to the very beginning. Before the Skull fuckers, Umarak, Creatures. Way back when we didn't know how bad the story would get. Back before the plotholes and botched pacing. Before the Toa were one dimensional caricatures and they were stoic heroes that looked amazing from their packaging. Back when we could've had a solid story like the 01-03 trilogy, rife with mystery and discovery. I remember spending so much time on here with you guys speculating and fleshing out the island in our ideas(sadly better than Lego ever did). I miss it, /biog/.

Been thinking about some shit regarding G2. I remember a plothole that always bugged me was the fact that the islanders never seemed to locate the golden masks, despite having thousands of years to look for them. So I thought. What if the villages kept being sacked over and over and the islanders were constantly relocating to the point where, after a few generations, they'd completely lost sense of the geography of Okoto? I feel if they had about as much sense of where shit was as the Toa it'd add to the mystery. It'd also be neat if instead of just simply meeting up to summon them, the Protectors had to rediscover the Temple of Time to call upon the Toa. Just a brainstorm.

What I'm holding out for is that LEGO will go out on a limb enough to get a good developer to make a Bionicle RPG. New characters, new story, familiar themes but add new shit to keep it interesting. Launch a new line of sets to go with the game launch and if the game is well done then you've just netted a massive demographic of gamers with your line of high-quality affordable merch. The problem then becomes whether the sets take a back-seat to the game but I just really want a good Bionicle RPG ffs

If memory serves, Bonkle went something like this. Lego wants to make a new Constraction series. Faber conceptualized the giant robot backstory based on his illness, and creates a world for the characters to inhabit. Alastair Swinnerton works closely in developing the original Story Bible, along with Bob Thompson, who was the main writer and general creative manager for Lego.
With the universe outlined, Lego brings in various outsiders to develop the media. Templar Studios creates MNOG and does much of its writing, and Saffire makes the cancelled PC game, with the two companies sharing some notes with each other.
Greg Farshtey, who wasn't part of the original developing team but has worked for the Lego Magazine, writes the comics since 2001. Writer Cathy A. Hapka is hired in 2003 to pen the novels, but Greg takes over in 2004. He always followed the story outlines made by the Story Team, but the details of how the plot goes from point A to B is dependent on him, except for the movie novelizations that have to follow the film scripts.
The movies are a different matter, written mostly by total outsiders, but following Lego's guidelines. Bob Thompson is the main overseer, Faber is a creative consultant, but Greg is kept far from the movies and Swinnerton's original movie script was also dumped in favor of the movie writers' treatment.
Bob Thompson leaves Lego in 2005, Greg takes over as the main writer, but the story is still a group effort. Some of Bob's ideas get dropped, and much of the planned stories are reshuffled, but that has been the case from the start. Beginning from 2007, Greg's influence gets bigger when he writes the online serials, and in 2009 he pens the story outline for the fourth movie (but not the script itself). After the line's cancellation in 2010, Greg takes over fully as the sole writer for the serials, which he never finishes.

He does have a backstory, it’s just not connected to Roboriders in the slightest lol. I wrote a short story for class a while ago and then one day got bored and made the main character from - he’s basically an alien/cyborg/something soldier that committed some kind of crime (or perhaps was framed) and so they stripped him of his memories (including his name) and exiled him to the desert. You can’t really see it in the pic but he’s got a gold Knights Kingdom sword, and the idea with that was that they’d give him either a crude form of defense (gold is a shitty metal for weapons) or he could sell it to traders and be defenseless. It also made him an easy target for bandits because I mean it’s a gold sword.

Also yes I fucking love that late 90’s Roboriders/slizers aesthetic and always love seeing when people revamp them. This guy Logan McOwen on Flickr made a bunch of new Slizers in the style of the old sets (pic related) and it was so cool seeing that. Makes me think there’s a reality where Slizers continued for years.

I've wondered for a while now if anyone ever travelled far enough to reach the wall of GSR, and would it just look like a giant wall out of nowhere. Also how traveling between different domes worked.

This was explained in the metru books and even the movie iirc. The Toa Metru literally go all the way to the far end of the protodermis sea and find a wall with a hole in it. The tunnels connecting the domes were just that, tunnels with a river of protodermis flowing through it. Sure, there are some pockets here and there like the area Mavrah was hiding but it's primarily just rivers from what I remember.

Traveling shouldn't have been too problematic, since I doubt the robot moved around that much even when it was active. It probably kept most of its limbs straight, allowing easier travel between the domes. Even if he bent around, travelers weren't shaken around thanks to artificial gravity.
The walls worked the way >>7026099 said, and the dome ceilings were like the insides of a cave full of lightstones. Maybe there were some people who managed to travel up to the roof, but to them it wouldn't have seemed strange, since that was all they knew, they had no idea that there was boundless space outside. It's sort of like how some ancient Earth cultures believed the sky was a dome.
That said, I still wonder what the extended universe would be like if they had stuck closer to the original concept behind the giant robot, that it was a rescue ship rather than a fully functional mini-world.

Most of the 2008 small sets are shitty too. Fragile joints, ugly torso pieces, boring color schemes and uncreative building. The only good thing about them are the masks and their 'function', but even then, they suck ass. At least the Agori were colorful and tried to be representative of their own tribe, by the exception of Arakus, which I think is one of the worst sets released.
