Is this a good idea?
My youtube channel is not that big but i guess i can make it grow if i will put such goal.
I just noticed that when youtube channel has at least 100 000 subs - it's completely fine to ask toy companies to SEND TOYS FOR FREE for reviews.

Right now i opened a channel with 144k subs. And he got toys for free.
A whole fucking bunch of - just for a review. He mentioned that he contacted the toy company and simply asked for examples for review.

what do you think anons?
I mean...its fucking free toys!

You can get toys for free, yes, but you need to ask yourself, is your channel good enough? Do you have a ton of subs? Is your channel popular? Do you upload regularly (like at least 1-2 times a week)? Are your reviews well-shot, good quality, is your personality engaging? If you don't have something worthwhile to offer the community, nobody is going to want to give you toys for free.

I have almost 1000 subs but...not sure if im ready to work so hard to keep channel alive to get it to 100k so it will be hip/cool just to get few toys for free.

It’s not being cyclical and it’s not that they get ruin as they decay. You can enjoy the good and love what it was but everything dies, everything ends. The trick is not to ponder on it going bad but enjoying it when it was good. Adventure time had a good spell and I can enjoy that. I don’t get hung up that it went bad. That is being a cynic.

I used to run a semi-popular toy review blog about 5 or so years ago. I didn't have near the numbers of a youtuber but had solid numbers and a nice looking site with photography.

The biggest/best thing I ever had sent to me was a big ThreeA Rex, but had to send it back after review.

Shartimus, Optishartbot, Baldmatrix, and many more don't offer anything of value and yet they are weirdly successful as reviewers.

I think that if you have adopted the good parts of /toy/ culture and have a good camera you're already ahead of any of them in terms of potential.

If you have a passion for reviewing toys and will constantly work to get better at it, then yes you should.

If you don’t care about reviewing toys and don’t want to put the work in to make a decent product, then no you shouldn’t.

You’re going to have to be somewhat established and have some sort of viewer base before any company will even consider sending you anything. Unless you’re the nephew of some big wig at Mattel or Gasbro, there are no short cuts.

So you have to ask yourself, is doing all that work for the possible chance for some free shit you might not even want worth it?

There's probably not much hope left for anybody new, unless they want to be a "personality", a.k.a. act like a dumbass more than review toys, and then spam every social media platform multiple times per day. I started out over a year ago, uploaded 70 toy videos in one year, only focus on the toys, and rarely break 500 total views a month. I correct the color, re-shoot when my camera fails to focus, and still get nothing compared to people who just upload a phone video of them talking in a poorly lit bedroom.

AVGN, Nostalgia Critic and their offshoots ruined it for everyone. No one can do reviews anymore, people want shitty characters, lots of pointless cursing, some running goddamn story line, wacky acting as if the person was on meth, ADHD flip-flopping of personality types every 3 minutes(REALLY common with the Jontron/Normal Boots game reviewers) and less facts and more "he says things I wanna hear".

Product companies want free press and praise, they only give out freebies in the hopes you will pat their ass, and if you do you get more stuff. Ashens has had a few freebie items sent to him, but since he's too honest it's not been a common thing. Nintendo even tried to get him on board but they wanted to fully script his videos, he told them to fuck off.

AVGN makes me the saddest because I think he got tired of his character ages ago. In his later videos he seems like he's struggling to keep cursing and getting angry at shit. He's fallen victim to typecasting. No one will see him as anything but AVGN. His attempts at other characters fell to shit and Board James became AVGN in his last episode. He'll never have a sustainable career as anything other than this foul-mouthed web video character. Even in his own videos he still has to curse and talk abut feces way too much or people get let down.

The gamer scene also fell to shit thanks to politics, half the people he's hung out with have turned alt-right(AlphaOmegaSin always was since he blames women on his divorce which only happened because he fucked a prostitute and his wife found out, Pat and Jontron have gone that way hard lately) and he either tells them to fuck off and alienates gamers, or hangs out with them and people think he's alt-right too. He caught enough flak from disliking Fembusters that people now assume he is anyway.

He dug himself a rut big time by forcing only one gimmick for years and choosing to hang out with a certain crew has left him guilty by association.

You're thinking a bit too much political-wise about him. He's been "out-of-steam" and trying to branch outside of AVGN for years before the whole GG and political shitstorm happened
But like a lot of creators, he got stuck with a franchise or quirk and is "forced" into it by the fans or because it's the only way to pay the bills
That said, I feel like James actually handled the whole thing a lot better than most people who get stuck into ruts or gimmicks because his channel now is like 80% content that he seems to actually care about (like films reviews, analysis and stuff like that, playing/shooting the shit with Mike) and every once in a while he puts out an AVGN episode to keep the old fans satisfied and get himself some extra income
He's certainly ended up doing a lot better than Nostalgia Critic, Retsupurae and on the /toy/ side of things, JobbyTheHong
I'd go into more detail on those 3 but this is enough of a rant as it is

It was an entertaining cartoon. It wasn't the best show.
But yeah, I don't like shows I like ever getting past 3 seasons max. Some burn out before that, but 3 tends to be the magic number.

Eventually the whole Youtube ad revenue, Patreon, etc models will either crash & burn big time, or will be overhauled to only pay actual content creators. Patreon already has a "no unauthorized use of copyrights" rule in place, they just don't enforce it, but with the new EU copyright laws they may have to and this will kill 98% of the furries who use it and a lot of others will suffer. I'm fucking tired of "I stand in front of a wall of video games and bitch about shit that hurts my feelings" and "audio reading of a creepypasta" getting this revenue, that's not content creation.

Bear in mind AVGN succeeded at that before either model, mainly off DVD sales, partnerships with Screwattack and other means, yet probably still worked a day job early on.

From what I hear of Channel Awesome they are about to crumble apart though due to everyone involved being a shitbag of a human being and little money left to run shit.

Jobby is the last person I'd call reliable. He's caustic, a ticking time bomb. He openly disrespects his sponsors on camera, allows people to keep sending him shit even though at this point he's hundreds of toys behind on his schedule, and to top it off, he just now is pulling himself out of a big fuckin slump where he was rarely uploading. These are not "reliable" traits, I would fire someone for acting this way. I'm not saying he has zero merit, just that "reliable" is not a word I'd use to describe him.

Shartimusprime I think only had success because he cheated his way through with fudged traffic numbers so I wouldn't take that as 100% genuine success
