Phase 1: Pathetic nerds who are mercilessly bullied throughout their early years grab onto fantasies to escape. Comic books and Star Wars were a refuge for harmless people who were considered pathetic and untouchable by most people.
Phase 2: It was a big joke until corporations saw the golden goose. Nerds make a lot of money as adults and have nothing to spend it on but toys. Corporations harvest the cash and nerds are relatively satisfied with the relationship. If anything it gives them a battleground to bitch about lore and canon.
Phase 3: progressive groups launch an attack. They can't make a dent in religous or hyper-masculine enemies, so they taget the weak and lonely nerd-class. The anti-bullies who cry about PTSD become the bullies. The anti-capitalists embrace Disney and Marvel. The anti-sexist -anti-racists attack a group of people based on their gender and race. They take over the direction of a franchise they don't care about, then change it to piss off identity-political heretics.
Through all this, the timid and pathetic lonely nerds might have borne the insult and joined the SJWs (some did, look at Reddit), but not everyone can stand to be accused for crimes committed centuries before thet were born. Nobody wants to be disregarded as a russian nazi for not liking a bad movie. And especially, these guys are tired of being bullied for being "pathetic virgins in mommy's basement."
But maybe it's a good thing they got this slap in the face. They will put away childish things and survival instincts will kick in. They'll find some satisfaction just making a protest vote here or there. Some will become true believers in opposing their enemies.
You might regret declaring war on a neutral group of people who might have been allies if you'd treated them with a little compassion. But it feels better to act "superior" than to persuade people to join you. Peace
