The problem with TLJ is that it's ALMOST really good as a star wars movie. No, really. You can even keep the plot and the characters the same and with a few minor changes it would have been 1000 times better both as a viewing experience and for toys.
The biggest sin of TLJ is that it has no aliens or interesting ship designs, and the action and editing of the film goes against the trademark star wars look. The other films are full of lingering shots of ships- landing, taking off, flying, whatever, along with a wide variety of aliens both in close-ups and as side characters. The biggest complaint of the movie, Admiral Laura Dern Tumblr whatever the fuck, is completely fine as a character IF it was actually a badass looking threatening alien. That way you still get the whole "subverting" bullshit the filmmakers want where they turn out to be good, but in a cool package that people and kids especially want to buy to battle Poe. Likewise, they had a real opportunity to make a "new" millennium falcon with the breakout DJ and the ship he steals. He's a great character who meets up with our heroes and steals a super expensive ship that plays into a narrow escape... And we literally never even see the ship for more than half a second. Good thing too, because the design is garbage. If this ship had a better design and a slightly more prominent role in the film, great! While we're at it give DJ a metal arm or something and dress him in not brown rags. There's little moments and characters like this all over the movie. If the designs were better and more focused on most problems with the story would have been acceptable.. because the star wars films have always had problems, but as long as they gave us enough cool to balance them out no one really gives a shit.
