Designing some parts for my portfolio, figured I'd start with making a hip-mounted scabbard, but with a separate piece for the actual hip connection. I tried to make it usable for SNOT techniques in other situations, and the offset is 0.25 studs since the options for those seem very limited outside of technic half beams and jumpers.
Any suggestions for changes?

Got the coastguard helicopter a couple of weeks ago and it was a surprisingly great set, so much so that it makes me want more coastguard stuff. I've always wanted a large unitary hull ship tho, seems like this could serve for some fun photographs on a pool vacation.

Sup /lg/,after moving I'm finally able to display my old lego technic sets (8062, 8431, 8436, 8455) again after 8 years of cold storage along with the two sets that never went away, pic related. Problem is those old sets are dirty as fuck, being full of dust that can't be just blown away easily: how do you guys clean your lego?

Warm soapy water, a drop or two of Ultra Dawn, a soft bristled brush and if you're really determined a drop or two of clorox bleach.

This works for me, but what people don't seem to get is that your "environment" (desert, mountain, city, etc) play roles in your ability to clean. Environment plays a part in lots of things, like brewing.

Also, I fixed up the car that came with the Mech Dragon set. The little flick fire missile gimmick was lame as fuck, plus, I didn't like that the driver had to lean all the way back to sit down.

I suggested the sonic cleaner if he wanted to leave them together.

If there's caked-on gunk, I highly recommend Simple Green. I'm soaking a bunch of stuff in it right now. Just leave it soaking for a day or two and all the gunk magically drops off.

I'm not that autistic, I'll just pass a swiffer a few times a week, it will be good enough, and eventually in a matter of some years I'll decide to clean them again. Beside, cheap ones hold less than a liter, which means it would take an eternity to clean all the pieces, while professional cleaners hold many liters but are big and expensive, it's not worth it for a one off.

Well, there ARE minifigs! Just none from LOTR or HP - two ewoks (!!!!) and some weird aliens from a theme I am unfamiliar with.

Lots of super nostalgic pieces! The printed castle corner, the 2x4 with axles and wheels, old style light saber, chrome key, yellow-face Harry Potter head... A lot of uncommon or nostalgic pieces in this haul!

I'd love Star Trek Lego, but most of the sets would get real repetitive.

$20-$30 Shuttlecraft
Expensive Bridge Playset
Expensive Ship Model

Repeat those with TOS, films 1-6, TNG, TNG movies, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Nu Trek, and Discovery.

You could probably have small battlepacks for Pon Farr, Arena, and with the City on the Edge of Forever rock.

There are a ton of Ship models that could be done, but those would mostly be just as expensive as the Enterprises, if not more so in some cases.

I agree with you. I was a big fan of Star Trek back in the old days but over time I figured out I was more interested in adventure rather then the slow build of Star Trek. I actually like the small builds with the Star Wars battle packs too. I think it goes back to growing up with He-Man and Thundercats. The heroes and villains always had those small single person or two person craft. Plus it helps that my brother is also a big Star Wars LEGO fan. He got those planets with the pilot and micro ship desk sets. As a result a few years ago I started the tradition that when I see him at Thanksgiving I present him with the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar. I first did it and simply asked he send me a pic of what gift he got each day. Instead he made a video for each day and sent it instead. And as a long haul truck driver that felt great, seeing my brother and his wife and son opening each day and putting it together. We have fun too when it's not obvious what the character or build is. When he couldn't remember what to call the droid tank he dubbed it the "U.S.S Naboo" and that robo faced guy with the gold crowbar in the last one, I dubbed him "Space Gandalf 2020" and we still laugh about that name now.

So yeah I got a few reasons to be a LEGO Star Wars fan.

I pulled my measurements from the Ninjago back scabbards, so they don't fit other swords atm. I just checked the measurements of the castle swords, and they're slightly wider, so it'd just be one measurement change to make them fit. It can hold the scimitar though, since I used a bar connection to hold the sheath to the belt

I highly recommend making a pass for lego/duplo at thrift stores once a week. Duplo is great for filling in space (ie- could cover baseplates in one layer of duplo for desired elevation over water) I believe jang did a vid on it

I don't know if this is helpful at all (I don't watch youtubers so I don't know if Jang already covered this) but I developed a technique for making multi-level baseplates that I used for this backyard pool scene. Basically, I wanted to be able to use 32x32 baseplates to create a seamless backyard area and seamless water surface. This lets you have multiple levels of baseplates that are all connected. You could keep increasing the elevation, or lower the difference in elevation by using plates instead of bricks.

Obviously the key point is that since the baseplate doesn't have antistuds on the underside, a baseplate resting on top of studs creates the same elevation as a standard plate.

Any ideas for smallish (16x16 or 16x32) buildings for a retro Lego town? I want it to have somewhat of a miami / LA feel with a small beach section and some palm trees.

Pic related shows the space I have. I already made some SNOT roads because I don't have the space for 32x32 roads.

I already have:
-sail n fly marina
-breezeway café
-pizza to go
-gas n wash express

They can be original sets or MOCs as long as it all fits together nicely.

I was originally thinking about getting a police and fire HQ, but those are all at least 32x32 which would take up a lot of space.

What this anon said. I used these pieces because I have a lot of them, but as long as you can support the majority of the surface you shouldn't have any problems. It's kind of hard to tell in that picture, but there's a green 4x12 brick directly underneath the minifigs.

I see stuff for LEGO Island I feel like I missed out on something great. Sadly I never even knew this game existed until recently. First LEGO game I ever played was "LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy." Seeing all the nostalgia around it I think it was a massive missed opportunity not to put out at least a Pepper Roni fun pack for LEGO Dimensions.

The "new" Lego games from TT games are nice, though they are all kind of the same in terms of gameplay.

I've played Lord of The Rings, Star Wars and the Lego Movie. All great fun and you can pick them up for a few bucks on Steam now.

That being said, some of the older non-TT games are great too. Besides Lego Island there's Lego Racers, Stunt Rally, Loco, etc.

There was even a game called "Lego Creator" which basically a sandbox game where you could create stuff and then "play" with it by driving vehicles, just walking around or even blowing everything up. This may seem trivial nowadays with games like Minecraft and Roblox, but 20 years ago this game was revolutional.

Actually, the chinkfigs tend to be more durable because the plastic they're made out of is softer than the minifigs that come in sets. I've noticed that it's a lot less stressful to the parts when I pop CMF arms and legs in and out.

I always forget Space Police III was even a thing. It was right before I got back into Lego, and to be honest I wasn't the biggest fan of the aesthetic, though I can definitely see its merits.
Also I'd be so in for Monster Fighters coming back. That theme had way more potential than what we got from it. At least we got some of the best sets in recent memory from it.

Yea. I made a secondary weaponized mini gun shot that can slot into the top of the original gun shop. You can see it in the bottom right pic. The crystal boxes are in the back of the ship.

Also made two little combining robots to help the humans.

I personally hated it. Only a few human vehicles looked good, the alien figures were ugly and their ships looked flimsy as hell.
I will say I'm not the best authority though since I didn't buy any, and I personally find Life on Mars to be the superior theme.

I loves LoM as well, and my favorite thing about it is the co-op theme that was sadly used then last time from any Lego product.
Almost all sets could connect because the main theme was idea that humans and martians had to work toghether to rescue MARS.

Seconding Elves. Those sets have a better color assortment than you'd find in other lines, and the creatures use the ball joint pieces that you're looking for. Both of the most recent waves are good picks, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

You can buy towball pieces in bulk through Bricklink. If you want some specific parts and don't want to have to buy a whole set to get them, Bricklink is ideal. Plenty of anons here will be happy to walk you through the site.

Otherwise, if you just want some pieces now, Elves is unironically one of the top choices.

Thanks! I most likely would have kept it had the set not been mostly sealed like it is, but the potential for other sets I've been looking for is too much I feel. That said, this is definitely one of the coolest and more fun looking sets I've seen. There were skatepark sets that used those halfpipe parts in dark and light gray. The corner bowl parts only came in blue or white though unfortunately.
