Wasn't sure if this should go here or /co/, but I figure here's fine.
What would you folks think of a webcomic done through toy photography? Something serialized, not "joke-a-day"

It would have to be well done. Like super well done. It's inherently cringey and awful so you're already starting at a baseline of terrible. You would need crystal clear pictures, good composition, good writing. And then you would need either elaborate sets or to fully play up the fact that they're just toys so all the scenes are just in the actual world with like bases made from stacked books and stuff, think Green Army Men video games. Like, I can picture it being neat, but I can picture a billion other ways for it be awful.

Just my two cents.

I had this idea where you take pictures of toys outside and then trace over the picture to add things in the background, change the toys expression, or add a text bubble to make a comic probably would take a long time but it could help someone who is trash at drawing

Twisted Toyfare magazine had jokey but long form comics that worked well. The writing is the key, and not shying away from the fact they're toys and it's silly on it's face.

Back when webcomics were a thing, years ago, there were actually a few. There were some high quality Transformers and Transformers X Busou Shinki ones that started on tfw2005. There was a 1:18 scale comic that featured all sorts of 1:18 scale toys. I've been trying to find it again but can't, so I assume the site's been taken down. And there were quite a number of GI Joe comics, some of which should still be available on General's Joes, assuming that site's even still around.

But I've been having a hella time finding even one comic that doesn't make me wanna gouge out my eyeballs. The comics on tfw2005 are now either these horribly drawn cringe fests or terribly photographed phone ins.

I think they gave up on them too, at this point the site is just yo go re half-assing a review mixed with politics bullshit and his opinions treated as undeniable fact.

Yeah. I'm going full tism with this. Think the opening five to ten minutes of each Toy Story movie. The characters would be true to themselves but without the ties of their source material if that makes any sense. I've been wanting to play with my toys again like I used to as a kid and I figured that if I do something like this it won't feel quite as much like a waste of time.

I feel like by limiting yourself to toy photography for this kind of thing you are actually gaining a powerful bonus to storytelling, especially when you have figures from different franchises interacting with each other based on something they might have in common. A regular, drawn comic would look like some shitty fanfic crossover but if you arrange the scene with figures you create a sense of distance from the franchises' serious continuity, especially if you treat them as part toys, part characters. If you have some ideas like that, feel free to give it a try here - just arrange something, post it in an appropriate manufacturer general and see how it's received. I'd love to see some well thought out sketch-like content. Keep in mind that some people might give you shit because that's how it works. Don't give up if it doesn't work at first.
