1) at extremely large events there's a couple trolls every year. Somrtimes they're dressed as nazis, sometimes they're dressed as something else, like castro or stalin. They're just dicks that want to push boundaries
2) 99% chance what they're actually talking about in that interview are maga hats and kekistani flags, not nazis. There's a chubby guy that's gone to a few cons as some sort of kek themed superhero. He's cosplaying a meme and some people get butthurt because richard spencer tried to co opt a "movement" that had nothing to do with race.
3) while not what they were talking about, certain shows in the south do occasionally have some local racist groups trying to crash the party, cause they do that every time.
It's not a problem that doesn't exist, but it's not a problem that's gotten worse. When people talk about venues requiring more security, it's because we've had an uptick of con-related threats, like a guy dressing as punisher wanting to kill the green power ranger.
It's not related to the greater social climate.
