You're interpreting it to mean "there needs to be a literal 1989 counterpart to the fashion being shown or else it's liiiiieeeeees." But anyone with a normally functioning brain would understand that the concept is fashion that fits in with the specific era.
Just like there's no exact dresses that look like Cinderella's or Snow White's dresses for this line, there is no exact dress that looks like Ariel's outfit for this line. The dress takes from various contemporary trends.
