What is the general opinion on the Piraka? Personally, I find them to be the least well-designed of original Bionicle.

Inika suffers from these same problems but not quite as bad as Piraka. I actually remember losing interest in Bionicle as a kid when these waves came out because of how much I hated them. It wasn't until Mahri that I got back into it.
Not trying to hate, but I rarely see Piraka or Inika discussed like other squads are so I'm curious what you guys think of them.

The Piraka arc was definitely the moment I went "what the hell are they doing to Bionicle?" but once the Inika showed up, their rivals started yo grow on me.

Opening the website and seeing it updated with this part for the first time was such a HOLY SHIT moment for me. And then they topped it with the Makuta twist in the next update.

I remember really hating them at first like some huge "not muh original Bonkle" autist. But I warmed up to them once they got released. They're not among my favorites, I prefer the more creative creature designs and functions of the Bohrok or Rahkshi, and the notion that there's Bionicle beings with fleshy faces and legit teeth still feels off, but there's things I like about them.

The also had a nice contrast between organic shapes made of rubber and mechanical detailing made of hard plastic to drive home that fact that these are biomechanical creatures.

They're unique in the sense their massive teeth don't resemble the common Rahi or Rahkshi feel the previous villain sets are. Skakdi in general have actual character rather than being minions of Makuta. It was cool to see villains who only cared for their own agenda.

I really liked their characterization. Instead of grandiose villains they were just opportunistic thugs, and that was a refreshing, and interesting, change. The fact that they were just as effective than some of the bigger-scope villains was cool too.

The most up-to-date version I have is actually even slightly different from the one currently up on Shapeways. The biggest issue with the available version is that the fins right above its eyebrows that sweep backwards are much too flat. This was actually a rendering error, and it causes a small gap in the print that isn't supposed to be there. This has been fixed on my copy of the file, however.

There were some minor tweaks to be done to the cheek spikes, like dulling the edges and tuning how they curve into the mouth area from behind, but those are mostly inconsequential.

The biggest alterations we were working towards was reshaping the eyes and overhauling the dimensions of the lower jaw area. The trim around the eye sockets isn't accurate and the way it connects to the bridge of the nose area needed to be fixed. The shape of the jaw is an absolute headache and there was still quite a lot of work to be done in order to make things as accurate as possible. If that alone had been taken care of, I'd be ultimately satisfied, but it's still disappointing to me that we weren't able to get the jaw quite right.

We poured countless hours over the screenshots and prototype images. I often felt like maybe I was being too harsh and nitpicky, but Cyberhand always assured me that the more critical I was, the better. I was constantly discovering nuances, shapes, and angles within the design and would illustrate my findings with thorough demonstrations justified by comparisons and examples. In the last of our exchanges, he fully understood what still needed to be fixed and seemed enthusiastic about making it happen. But I suppose something went down in his personal life just before we were able to finish the mask. He left me completely in the dark about it, and I haven't heard from him personally since.

They did get a little samey there. Vezok was kinda dumb, Hakann was a little more brutal, Reidak was...kinda dumb, Zaktan was a little more schemey, so was Thok but as a loner instead of a group player, and Avak just liked building shit. That was about it.

Hey man, if I knew anyone else skilled enough in digital modelling, I'd have the mask finished by now. I'd love to reconnect with Cyberhand, but it's just not looking like that is going to happen. I'd also love to perfect the design eventually, but I flunked out of advanced welding in high school because I couldn't wrap my head around the modeling software, so there's no chance I'd be able to get it done on my own.

If I do consult help and get the mask finished, I wouldn't want to upload it to Shapeways myself. I feel like that would infringe on Cyberhand's efforts. Perhaps I would be interested in a partnership, that way we could print, cast, and offer copies of the mask on our own.

Vezok was more of a loner than Thok and he's mostly quiet and collected, but extremely brutal regardless. After part of his personality splits off into Vezon, he loses rationality and becomes more ill tempered and animalistic.

Hakann is crazy in the head and a caniving motherfucker who will stab anyone in the back.

Reidak is actually rather intelligent and crafty, but is also if few words and extremely tough and brutish, so the others wrongfully take him for an idiot.

Zaktan is the most tricky and sinister. Also the leader of the group and probably most powerful. He comes up with the plan and makes anyone who doesn't follow it suffer.

Thok extrmely intelligent and thinks himself above the others. He outsmarts pretty much everyone but Zaktan to get what he wants and is generally on no one's side but his own.

Avak is the weapons expert and engineer. He's a bit of a literal loose cannon, talks too much, and lies a lot. Bit of a coward too, I think.

They're all fairly different but each one is tied together by a thick layer of OW THE EDGE, which is why they might seem a little similar on the surface.

Hey Rollout, I understand where you're coming from but I'm seriously dying to see this piece finished in both scales. I understand you don't want to take traffic away from Cyberhand on Shapeways but I can guarantee he hasn't been getting any purchases for months now and probably wouldn't see any change in his shop's traffic if you and another modeller uploaded the finished models onto the site. Because I and a lot of users really want this thing done and I know myself as well as a few others would rather have it in the metals/plastics Shapeways has as opposed to just some resin molds.

And besides, he's returned to the internet, and he's openly and clearly just ignoring the Bionicle community and focusing on other projects. Dig in his devientart and you'll get a link to some hobby collector forum he's been posting on with his Doc Ock tenticles. I would consult with him one last time to ask if he would be fine with you taking over the project and opening a new shop on Shapeways with the final two models. Hit the Cyberhand's Forge topic on TTV and ask if anyone there is good with 3D modelling and if not there, keep tabs on this general/Discord. I'm sure one of us here is competent in that field. Here, just to make it easier and illustrate my point. He vaniahed from TTV well before 2018, and here he is, working on more projects, clearly moved on from the MOUP. Now I respect his decision to put a cap on the piece and do something else instead but this is just to emphasize that he doesn't look like he'll be willing to go back to it. Perhaps the community was just too much for him. Either way, I would lov eto see you continue this yourself.

When the Piraka betrayed the Dark Hunters, The Shadowed One tries killing Zaktan with his eye beams, but because Skakdi have been mutated to shit, it fucked with his molecular structure and instead of disintegrating him, it breaks him into a swarm of microbes (yeah, protodites). He's able to shift, split apart, reconstitute, and his voice sounds like a million eerie chirps coming together to form words. These abilities are taken away by the ocean mutagen later on, but in that state he's one of the fucking coolest Bionicle characters ever.

2005 was when I started losing interest in bonkle, the visorak felt kinda cheap and the hordika didn't capture my interest for some reason outside of the half hard/half gumrubber weapons. The piraka came around and were kinda fun since the way the spine attached made them easier to dismember/show battle damage (my autistic 1*-something-year-old self had determined that an arm was disabled if the spine came off the black peg, ditto with the legs and the pelvis spinal attachment). Zamor launchers also had some oomph to them that rhotuka and disks lacked, and for as much headcannoning as I did I was happy for the expansion of the universe and focus on anything but moldy old turaga stories.
Then the inika came out and I had some great fun having Nuparu rip and tear with his claws.
Looking back it's funny how much enjoyment I got out of some of the most blatant clone sets since the bohrok.

That commercial was so cringe-inducing that it almost turned me off from Bionicle completely when I first saw it. And I was like 10. Local store had a bunch of the red guard dude for 15€, and I gotta say it's not a bad set for that price. Looks nice, has bit more involved build than just "here's the torso, just slap the limbs on" that good number of SW sets have, and he's a good parts pack to boot. May pick up one or two more because who doesn't love red Hordika necks or the blades or random red technic bits?

LoSS was an underwhelming attempt because it was little more than an afterthought in an action figure-focused line, but imagine the stuff they could make if they diverted a bigger budget and more attention to combining modern Technic engineering with out-there fantasy. I've always had great fondness for the 01-03 Technic-style builds, models that were more about intricate builds and interesting gimmicks than articulation and easy snap-together construction.

Funny you mention him, LoSS was actually one of my favorite G2 sets simply because I felt like they at least tried something. Compared to the action figure aesthetic of the rest of the line, it was almost a callback to the initial sets. I get the criticisms, but I still found charm in it.
That said, I'm the anon that has been buying up rahi recently. Building them and really seeing the level of complexity the Technic bits allowed is bittersweet because it felt like they gave up. There was some really inventive design work going into them, and yet they went with the easy way out.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I remember a common talking point, back in the days on BZP, claimed they stopped making those giant Rahi sets cause they sold bad. Having been a kid at the time who could't afford any but the Nui-Rama, I can understand that. I feel their price was needlessly inflated because they came with two models for the play feature, though. I'd love to see single new Rahi-like sets that retain the complexity and some interesting features without costing an arm and leg. The shortage of more ambitious, titan-sized sets in HF and Bonkle G2 was a disappointment.
Fuck, I really want a Slizer reboot or something similar. That line had an "anything goes" philosophy, the designers could go wild without having to limit themselves to humanoid builds. After years of mostly black and brown Star Wars humanoid sets, that would be a huge relief. Bring back affordably small quirky robot guys with varied body builds and small gimmicks, and go all out with the larger sets. Update Blaster as a modern titan, give Millennium a power suit that actually transforms into a motorbike, and fill the rest of the line with imaginative animal-machine hybrids. They wouldn't even need to worry about staying true to the lore, Slizers barely had one and it was crazy to begin with.

But I hear you. Throwbots/Slizers given a reboot, even just taking the general idea and going in a totally new direction with Technic would be incredible. I'd love to see what they could pull off when not restricted by CCBS and returning more to the Technic roots. Because you're right, there was definitely a unique design philosophy going there. It didn't matter what the body shape was, each character was completely unique and built to look different from the rest. It was fantastic and would totally work in this day and age.

Tahu was devolved back into a Toa Mata albeit retaining his adaptive armor.

Takanuva was returned to normal size after leaving Karda Nui and had his Light restored. The only reason he was silver was to draw less attention to himself when exiting the Mata Nui robot.

Finally, the reason why Gresh's blades are silver is because his old blades got destroyed in the Battle of Bara Magna so he replaced them.

I think the incredibly divisive responses about whether or not people ITT liked Piraka is a great example of how hard it is to make a solid Bionicle reboot. For some folks, they seemed to have been the point where the series absolutely jumped the shark into trying way too hard, but on the other hand, for late 00s kiddos, these were basically the beginning of a new generation of Bionicles that, even if still technically contained within G1, did have a much edgier and varied aesthetic with an entirely different appeal to them. Personally speaking, my very first experience with Bonkle were the McDonalds and Nesquik figurines of the Pirakas and Inikas, they were what drove me to purchase the Barraki that were currently out in stores and contingently my nostalgic attachment towards this second half of G1 is much greater than the first.

It's funny because, in the middle of this division between the older, more mechanic anthropomorphic Asimov-esque designs fusioned with ancient spirituality and the newer, more organic designs fusioned with technology and sci-fi elements, G2 managed the brilliant feat of not appealing to either and just having robots that just look like dogshit sprinkled with random gold parts.

There were some neat sets over the years, but the quality definitely slumped starting around 2006/2007. Those same years also gave us some of the best sets though, so take that as you will.
G2 revived the series for a short time with a new style, some neat stuff but overall you didn't miss much. Nothing was ever quite like those first years.

Everyone's got their favorite years, but nobody can really agree on which one is the """best""" per se. As for the toys by themselves, I personally feel each year had something great. 2004-2005's standard sets were a bit clone-ish, but the heroes of 2004 get praised a lot for just they're general looks and I can totally see it. From 2006-2009, they focused more on posability and unique looks than action features, so while 2007 and 2009 especially had some of the best looking and posing standard sets, you might be disappointed if action features were your thing. 2005-2008's shining stars were the titan sets, however. 2005 and ESPECIALLY 2006 are constantly praised for having some of the best titan sets in the whole series. 2008 and 2009 also introduced vehicle sets, which were the highlights of those years for many. As for 2015-16, it used a different building system that focused more on ball sockets and human-like forms than the original technic, alien-esque builds of the past, but I feel they are the saving grace of the reboot. Heres a dump of the Toa of Stone Ive been working on for the last 2 years, and had to do so many Bricklink orders to finish. Sand Green id a pain in the ass to get. His gimmick revolves around small part swaps like Gali Nuva. His waist armor is also flip-gauntlets, and his poncho is removable, and his entire design revolves around giving his arms as much range as possible.

I havent really made anything since I got my new job or anything. I got frustrated with the hobby after I built my Bow-Toa of Air. Because he didnt turn out how I had hoped, and his actual recursive bow gimmick wouldnt stop dissassembling itself. So Ive just been taking a break for a while. Indigo got a full update, Toa Gudgye got a full reboot too, and Tatotoroka got even more piece-intensive. And I built a huge mask wall im currently populating with mata heads and brainstalks, but its becoming very costly very quickly.

Mask Wall and Tato/Gali for scale. Its well over 1000 pieces now. Possibly the most part-intensice thing Ive ever made. It put sych a fucking dnt in my collection I had to bulk order basic parts to continue its construction. Each 6 mask section is about 2bucks a piece. 3x6x6. 3 sections tall, 6 sections wide, 6 masks to a section. Completely modular too.

It was a little more complicated than that. I lost my mother and my life snowballed out of control. I ended up working at a hospital and moved out on my own, and thats how lifes been for the last 2 years. Someone found my gfs tumblr a while back because of her shinki posting, and I lost my MOC pics in a harddrive crash, so I decided to drop by new pics with a much better camera. But yeah, life moves on, Im done namefagging, I kinda miss all the stupid Black6 posting though. This place was like the last bastion of originality in the fanbase. Im kinda disappointed that this generals been so dead. Even with the contests nothings really held this place together. I guess Bionicle truly is dead huh? I cant even find clearenced sets anymore. If anyone still has all the old MOCs and shitposts like Anchorarms, ChiroxAnon, and that one lone Galidor fan, Id really like to see someone put together an imgur archive so theyre not all lost.

Well it's nice to have you back as you've noticed many people have moved on to other hobbies, G2 didn't have enough staying power for the long run and 10 years of G1 content had to run out at some point. Honestly, your mocs are solid, the only thing I'd recommend now is to order a light box from Amazon to improve on the photography aspect of your Mocs that way not only are they presented better but they appear more legible, hence more feedback as people will have a better idea of how things are built.

Should enter the contest though, even if you only join Browser Discord to post your entry, sign on if you win and leave afterwards. If running a 0 prize contest with strawpoll to better integrate it here was realistic or potentially successful, I'd do it but let's face it, you need to win something.
