I grew up with every single incarnation of the Transformers, going back to the TV spots for the first Marvel issue. There have been great story and toy moments in most generations. Only a handful of years have been a total disaster.
Story wise, Beast Machines was the first media Charlie Foxtrot. As goofy as the comics and shows had often been, the entire production of BM was a behind-the-scenes nightmare, which it never recovered from. It had some neat toys tho.
RID had a lot of fun toys. I think I bought every redeco of the Spy changers. Regular. Clear plastic. Comes with tin coffins. I had them all. Plus the original versions from G2 when they were Gobots.
No part of the Unicron trilogy had good cartoons, but the comics were fun. The toys were great. Even the Playskool looking ones like Hot Shot. Primus, I wish the kid's toys looked that good toys instead of the fucking shampoo bottles we get now.
Animated had great media (eventually) and really fun toys. I get why they didn't sell, but I also get why they have such dedicated fans. I'm one of them.
The movies are trash, but the toys were fun. At least for the first two. They got worse as plastic costs went up and everything became hollow and cheap. This is when the KOs started taking these toys and making wildly better OS versions that are some of the best toys of the past decade.
I'm excited to see Bumblebee as a VW again and I might get every one I see as they on sale, just for fidget toys.
