The child‘s grandmother moved in with them to give the little boy the semblance of a stable household, but since an accident she is blind (you can see she isn‘t looking at the boy while he tries to get her attention), can‘t really play with the kid since he doesn‘t understand and has become a psychological and financial burden.
The bills keep accumulating and since the mother refuses to work and the grandmother is unable to many things in dire need of fixing are left unrepaired, most notably the missing roof.
The kid will grow up traumatized by his surroundings and desocialized by the missing human interaction at home and the lack of a father figure.
He will leave his home at age 16, live on the street for 3 years and then die in an alley with a needle in his arm.
