That only applies to toys in production. It's no longer just a toy, it's a vintage collectors item. Loose MOTU figures aren't super rare or anything so it's not necessarily a big deal in this case but I read about a guy who bought MOC and MISB for his son to open. That's ridiculous.

The value of an item is subjective, even baseball cards could end up being valued ridiculous amounts, in the case of MOC/MISB toys, the value would be put on it's mint status.
Of course if someone doesn't value it the same way it's quite meaningless, again, like rare baseball cards.

Not a lot of OoP figures are actually worthwhile, and most of those MOTU figures, while they have retained a little over retail value, are still pretty cheap and found everywhere. Not every old toy belongs in a museum.
