To add lie upon lie Metroid, Metroid II, and Super Metroid sold well in both Japan and North America. In fact Super Metroid was bigger in Japan, selling 710k copies, no surprise because it was the first actually good entry in the franchise, while Americans and Europeans shied away from the game despite better mechanics, art, graphics, and world design. Which goes to show their shit taste.

If you mean it was shutdown on Samus Returns's release day Samus Return didn't even come out until the next year. You could download a fully playable version of AM2R in 2016 and Nintendo started shutting it down at the years end. Samus Return came out in late 2017.
