If you take toddlers and put them in front of a boombox with the radio on, sometimes the fact that something that isn't a person is talking can scare the shit out of them. It's probably becoming less and less common now that everything everywhere makes sounds and talks though, but Furbies came arround at a point where there weren't many things like that yet, and they didn't just have one or two lines with a crappy paper-cone-speaker. Too much at once.
And now with a lot of folks who found them too weird back in the day and a whole internet that loves to exagerate everything, furbies have become horrifying soul-sucking monsters that must be killed with fire [insert aditionnal stock creepy memes]
Furbies are just cool fuzzy little dudes and pretty impressive on a technical level with all the "learning" and stuff.
