The "value" comes from owning a sealed set, usually Star Wars or another licensed brand, that's been out of production for at least a few years. Usually only sets priced at $300+ appreciate in value to any significant degree, because those sets are only available online or through actual Lego stores, meaning fewer people have the opportunity to buy them, and fewer people buy them and leave them unopened because of the cost. And most of the "value" is from richfags who are willing to spend a thousand dollars on a sealed UCS Millennium Falcon from 2004.
The boom for making money on Legos has already passed, because everybody is hoarding sets these days. You're much better off investing your money into something like a mutual fund instead of taking up space in your house with a bunch of boxes that you may or may not be able to find a buyer for in a decade.
