I've been playing with the idea of commiting financial suicide and get into /toy/ hobbies. Always loved the stuff you post here, so many cool figures!

Now my birthday was a couple of days ago and I got this lovely Marvel Legends Deadpool as one of the gifts and that pretty much sold me the idea. Now I am already thinking about my next figure.
And I gotta buy some of those action bases.

So any advices for a newcomer?
In any case I'm glad to be here.

Go for moderately expensive or cheaper collectors toys. Marvel legends are a ton of fun. Imports are barely worth it anymore. You can easily fall into the trap of being an elitist and only getting really high end toys, but it really isn’t worth it. I enjoy getting some marvel legends or Neca stuff at this point way more than when I was buying hundreds of dollars of imports a week.

You will make mistakes at first, paying way too much. That's okay, learn from them.
Don't rush in and buy super-expensive stuff right off the bat. Spend a lot of time learning where and when to buy.
Don't collect everything that you find interesting. You'll run out of money and room. Collect just a few lines/intellectual properties.
Open your figures and enjoy them, but keep the boxes if you can, just in case you fall out of love with a figure.
Learn to paint and repair figures, and to paint and construct dioramas.
A toy collection is a hobby, not an investment.

Choose a few characters/themes and go with that. Individual lines (Marvel Legends, Star Wars Black Series) can be traps you arent careful. I have a few Legends figs that I have but dont like that I bought just to add more to my collection.

and see how people have their stuff displayed. Some people have shelves of just Nintendo stuff, only Robots, X-men, Spider-man characters. Thats a good way to start. Pick one thing and work your way outward.

Watch reviews on toys. Those are good starters to get familiar with the different lines and styles of the way companies do things

Also keep in mind what you're going to do with it once you own it.
There's so much shit i let pass by, despite thinking it looks like the coolest thing ever, but because i'd probably just let it sit on a shelf forever or rarely goes on display because it wouldn't fit with the rest of my collection, i choose not to buy it.

I mainly buy 1:18 scale figures, but i still buy a dozen or so other scale figures a month still.
Stuff like Mezco's figures are too hard to pass up, especially when they can basically be the definitive version of that character in 1:12.

I take prices vary a lot then. Still where I live I doubt I'll get a great price but I'll take my time checking for good places where to buy.
Still I feel I'm much of a rookie where it comes to identify "good" figures. Any tips to know what to look for when buying?

I'm not much of a collector, really. My idea is to buy figures of characters I really like, I don't care that much about completing sets.

I'm interested in the custom models, making your own stuff looks like a ton of fun and I've seen here some interesting stuff. Sadly I'm not sure I have the patience and manual skill to do some of that stuff, specially for painting (I have a very shitty hand pulse).

Yeah display is an issue. Specially for dust.. how do you keep figures clean enough? I get the feeling I'll end up getting some glass cabinet or at least individual displays of some kind.

I need to learn more about companies and toys quality. I can hardly see much beyond if I like the figure and has the articulations I want (usually a lot, I prefer figures I can move. I like to play a little).

check out the display thread I linked to. I just (5 months ago) moved to a new place and dont have all of my comics, toys, and books situated yet, so I don;'t get too worked up about dusting, since I havent posted pics on here yet.

That will come with buying toys and watching reviews. I learned that McFarlane toys are more "moveable statues" than articuagted figures. Also, NECA is known to be brittle, and Marvel Legends and Black series figs are better with making masks/aliens look better than humans

I've found so many Speeder Bikes, TIE Fighters, and nearly every SW sequel vehicle on clearance for under ten bucks, that i could make a cool hanger diorama of all that shit bein prepped for combat.
But to store it afterward? I have enough problems with my collection right now as it is. I have two Abrams which are just to big to even play with properly. Same with 1:18 helicoptors and jets. They're just oversized delicate prop pieces, so i can't own more than one, especially when they need to be stored properly to not get fucked up.
With almost every toyline, you can just shove them into a toy box and not have any issues with them breaking or paint transffering. So these can be stored away very easily... but then, you need enough boxes and a place to put them in.
I find that smaller boxes are best for storage, as you can put them just about anywhere and they still hold a lot figures/accessories. Buying enough boxes can become expensive though, but you should be buying them slowly as your collection grows, so it won't be bad or noticeable.

Thanks! Guess knowledge comes with practice, as it happens with anything else.

BTW I'm thinking about getting a Vegeta figure. Do you know any particular set/brand I should look for good DB figures?

Identifying a good figure will depend on what you want from a toy. If you want to have something big and impressive, something that can pose extremely well, something with really nice paint and details, something that has a ton of accessories, something that is inexpensive and allows you to assemble more for the same price, etc.
Watch video reviews and lurk the board here for pictures to see what is possible. You picked a good time to get into collecting; it's a golden age for toys right now.

I'm not a db fan but Figuarts seem to be the gold standard.
Figure-rise (from the same parent company) is also available, they are models but Bandai's models are extremely easy to build.

We're in a retraction period right now.
Not as many lines are being made anymore, waves are smaller than ever, and availability is at an all time low with TRU gone and collector companies scrambling to get their stuff up in other stores.
Prices are also going up too, especially for import toys, since they're not selling as good as they used to.

The only companies seeing actual growth are indie lines, like with kickstarter.

Golden age would be the 80s, when toylines were mostly original and getting their own cartoons.

Highest time for the modern era was probably 2009-2013. After that, there's an noticeable decline in quality or features being taken away, plus the rising costs of toys.
You can't get awesome shit like this anymore without paying out the ass.

I think it's all franchise based. Domestic anime figure alternatives aren't good at all.

Marvel Legends are the high bar for affordable domestic toys. They've gotten incredible. But don't knock the imports.

Marvel I do domestic, anime I do import, Transformers I do 3p.

Shit like the printing faces is actually just a cost cutting effort, because shading/weathering/etc are more expensive to do by hand, especially if you want to do them in any sort of quality.

There was still far more output back in the late 00s and early 00s in terms of toy being made.
Right now the only shit that gets made is if you're a Marvel or Star Wars character. Maybe DC.

assume everything is both bigger and smaller than the pictures tell you.
I am quickly running out of space with the box storage, but the figures are surprisingly less cumbersome to store than what i thought.

My advice is to keep your collection to a tasteful amount. And most importantly, don't let your figures become too cluttered. You have to find a way to display them so that they're pleasing to look at. A shitload of anons here make the mistake of putting all of their eggs in one basket, if you know what I mean. 4-5 figures on each shelf look better than 20.
While it's not a must, I personally think a collection looks better in a glass shelf, so you might wanna get one of those. Ikea has some nice, cheap options, like Detolfs that work great for everything.
Also, if you don't care about a certain figure anymore, sell it.
Another piece of advice I can give you, is try to get your stuff from a physical store, because you can see what you're buying. Online's fine, but there's always a chance you can get a defective piece.
And don't worry about getting a full collection of a particular line. Just get whatever figure you're interested in.
Lastly, and this comes as a no-brainer, but if you're having financial struggles, concentrate your money in the important areas first, because this is just a hobby.

Pace yourself . I know it’s tempting to fill that shelf with your favorite heroes doing awesome poses, but when you do that, then you start to feel empty when you don’t have a new figure coming in. And that will lead you to buying something you never really wanted. And THEN, your shelf will become cluttered and won’t look good anymore

Good choice. Your wallet will thank you and you will have much more room to display toys you actually want.

Go ask the gunpla general for good beginner kits. I feel your pain. I have tremors from a neurological disorder. If you get super good at masking, that can help with paintjobs. Plenty of kits look fine unpainted as long as you sand your nubs smooth and apply a matte varnish.

My house is full of animals and I hate dusting. Detolf doors have about 1/4" of clearance all around and they WILL get filled with dust. I installed some weather seal strips in my detolf and it changed my life.

You're ignoring the health of the toy indstury and focusing on a few companies when you say this.
Even companies like Hasbro have reduced production on their lines.
You're basically only getting a toy today if you're Marvel, Star Wars, or DC, but not if you're Tron, A-Team, Avatar, etc etc etc. There used to be more movie toys, and even when a movie like Blade Runner or Pacific Rim gets a toy line, it's limited to collectors only and even those lines are more limited in numbers than they were before.

Likeness has been the same since McFarlane had everyone using the molds to their fullest potential in the 90s. Since then there really has been no revolution in tech and is entirely dependent on the sculptors' abilities.
Articulation isn't as good as before. Toy Biz MLs used to have upwards of 50PoA per figure, along with better paint apps, if not fully painted figures. Companies like McFarlane cut back from their 30PoA high points. We've seen Hasbro reduce articulation on their figures and they're also reusing molds more.

It does matter, since it's a literal cost cutting factor and substitute for better apps. Only companies like Hasbro and Bandai benefit from that technology, since their QC isn't as good and/or they never used a lot of paint apps before. For companies who did have good QC, it's a step backwards from what the better paint apps they used to use (DCC, McFarlane, etc).

From that pic, you can see I've switched to ammo cans and bought organizers for them when needed.

I also use those clear plastic organizers and tackle boxes, plus some larger boxes used by medical suppliers.
I like the metal ammo boxes best, which you can get relatively cheaply at Costco for ~$20.

i personally love the marvel revoltechs, deadpool and wolverine in particular, while my fav marvel legend is probably the killmonger one from a few months ago.

I also love a whole bunch of my SHF Kamen Rider Build and Bruce Lee. Try out some Robot Damashii Patlabor toys or the Zaku II. Honorable mentions go to 1000toys synthetic humans, they pose nicely with the shf or revoltechs as villains.

Thrift stores like Ross, 5 below, TJ Maxx, Marshall's, ("99c only stores" even), are good places to find "recent old" toylines for a discount
