Yeah, toy makers have realized that they can't switch audiences from boys to girls just by adding pink or blue.

That's why Lego spent a billion dollars on researching how little girls play. It was well worth the investment because they're currently printing money with their minidoll lines.

Doesn't check out. Both the PoP toy line and TV series debuted in 1985.

What killed MotU was failure to adapt; they stayed stagnant, and franchises like TMNT and X-Men eventually crept in and ate their lunch. By the time Mattel noticed the writing on the wall, it was already too late. Attempts to resuscitate the franchise proved less than successful (see New Adventures).

Also, children can be notoriously fickle and flighty, especially when it comes to what's "in".

Remember when the series was successfully rebooted in the early 2000's with great figures and a good cartoon only for Mattel to flood the shelves with nothing but Skeletor and He-Man variants that nobody wanted because every kid already had at least two of each character leading to the cancellation of the line and cartoon?

He-man/Skeletor variants didn't help, but the show just didn't resonate enough with kids anyway. If the show was popular enough, it could've floated the series another year for Mattel to get their shit together, but it just wan't popular enough. It tried to rake influence from the action anime craze when that was dying down to give way to the toy/card gimmick anime craze; so it was overshadowed by YuGiOh and Beyblade.

Honestly if they had done the He-Man reboot about five years later on when Avatar was all the rage then i think it would have really taken off, at that point audiences were ready for semi-serious action acrtoons again and it would have been the only one of those shows that actually had as many toys.

It didn't help that the air time of the cartoon kept changing either. I didn't know they made new figures when I first started watching, but I know that I kept trying to catch new episodes and not seeing it.
