-You can't use the gun if you aren't the original owner, and in some cases even run away back to the owner or shoot you for trying to use it.
-Better aim and firepower
-Have super powers (after getting upgraded in Japanese G1, but we didn't see all of them)
-Allows a human (Nebulan, Beast, etc...) partner to armor up and defend themselves or support a larger cybertronian, so they aren't just a burden like in most occasions.
-Depend on the version, they can also fly and shoot independently.
