It was called The Knights of the Zodiac (El Caballeros de la Zodiaco) in the Mexican dub too and it was only after people got a hold of the manga that they started calling them saints, which IMO was for the best because they are literally knights and Kurumada's way of piecing together terms and lore is always a mess; he gave the title of Angel to the human warriors that fought for Olympus but gave specific names to Poseidon and Hades' warriors despite them being Olympian gods too.
Still, editing out the soundtrack, the blood, and the melodrama is what killed it for the US IMO. Without them it's just a lamer Ronin Warriors with confusing powers and it was as good as dead by then; and Saint Seiya needs to be a visceral experience so you don't pay much attention to the questionable writing and homoerotic undertones.
