But I feel like there's a general gamut of people's actual feelings on the matter, some people just really want these figures to exist and wouldn't or can't actually buy them, some people would pay retail, or double retail, and some people really are nuts and would pay big bucks or give up a firstborn. (I have a few things I'd be willing to pay modestly for, but definitely not at the moment since I've hit my own financial brick wall.)
The way I see it, you'd probably get a few bites, but probably not enough to make back much of your investment of time, effort, and supplies, unless you actively went out and like gauged the interests of various other parts of the internet and fandoms to find potential customers. Maybe consider setting up a website to operate from, and to help word of mouth start easing having to find customers after you've made some business. (But I'd probably warn you that if you do licensed stuff, someone might slap you with a C&D, that does sometimes happen with fan-made merch.)
But basically I'm not saying you should totally be cynical about this or anything, I think this kind of creative endeavor could be really neat! If it won't detract from your ability to survive jobless, I'd say go ahead and try this kind of thing just to see if it ends up being fun for you at the very least. If it ends up developing into a lucrative(although I doubt enough to live off of) hobby and general creative outlet, then all the better.
