Diaclone pretty much has three flavors right now.
You have the larger and fuck huge sets that are several individual vehicles that can combine in various ways to make bigger ones and mechs. These are mostly sold as sets so no need to track down a bunch of little guys to make the bigger ones.
Then you have the smaller infantry stuff like the small Powered Suits which have basic articulation and not a whole lot of engineering but are meant to be more grunt like. Kind of filling the same niche as these are the add on packs that provide wings, extra weapons, treads, etc. for the powered suits.
The third and most recent flavor is the Waruder stuff which is exactly what you describe. A bunch of little guys that you buy individually but can combine in an absurd number of ways to make bigger stuff (pictured).
The big selling point of the franchise is the crossplay and compatibility between sets. The little powered suits can hook into the bigger sets in different ways and the bigger sets can part swap between each other thanks to the modular design of the individual vehicles.
For a starting point I recommend either Dia-Battles V2 Alpha Plus version (a rerelease of the first set in this rebooted line with updated QC and more paint) or, if you can find one, a Dia-Battles Cosmo Manuver type which shares the design of two of it's vehicles with the regular Dia-Battles but with a new version of the "plane" vehicle with all kinds of added bits and features, including more gun and a secondary set of arms.
The littler guys are really only worth it to go with the bigger sets and something like Big Powered, while definitely incredible, would probably be better as a second purchase rather than an introduction to the line.
