new game is kinda odd, got myself and a few friends a few, have yet to play but its definitely the definition of same but different. Got to say fuck you to toywizard once again as walmart is the only place we've found any at and after our second trip it only had the shit ones left with the rest only being found on TW at scalper prices.

Honestly, I've played the game with some friends and I enjoy the rules of the game. Only complaint is that every Ultra besides Hydorous is shit and barely roll at all. The game is much more enjoyable with the core bakugan.

How much were this at retail? Jesus, the cheapest you can find them is 10$ per ball + card, and not even new ones, just used ones with no box or instructions or anything.
Some guy of my country posted a whole lot of them with the arena and an official calculator for like 50U$ but it was obviously very good for this rathole of jews because it was gone within the day.

I can't imagine a 6+ having any fun putting ultras back in their ball

also a heads up, the cores I've bought all have a ding on the top of their card because they aren't protected by a sleeve like the ultras. maybe it wouldn't be an issue if they put their money into making them less flimsy instead of spot glossing.

Are there gonna be starter decks or something similar? I'm lowkey interested in trying out the advanced game with a buddy of mine, but building two whole decks from the ground up from booster packs alone seems like a tedious waste of money. Is there no better option for entry level play? Because that's ridiculous.

There are 2 starter packs right now. I think one of them comes with 40 cards and 3 bakugans, and the other one comes with 40 cards and 5 bakugans.
Also cores.

Actually, correction, the smaller starter pack comes with 5 bakugans and 10 cards + cores, this one is obviously intended for children and not to play the card game.

There there is a real starter pack that comes with 3 bakugans, 6 cores and 40 cards.

There are 2, but the one you are talking about is the one I said is meant for children, it only comes with 5 actual deck cards (because the other 5 are character cards that don't go in the deck).
There is a simpler ruleset for the game that doesn't use cards, you just roll the toys into the cores, mainly meant for children I guess, and that second smaller starter pack is obviously designed to cater to that style.

So yeah, there is only 1 TCG starter set right now. Tho I do hope they bring out more in the future. At least this game isn't like YGO or Magic, so i'd imagine you aren't going to be looking for super specific cards, seems like the models are the most important thing.

The card game is surprisingly complex from what I've seen on youtube. Deck building and resource management is a big part of the game and they mix it up with a bit of strategy regarding which Bakugan to roll and when to use which card. The first version of Bakugan had no deck building and only allowed 6 cards to be used (3 ability/3gate) while this new incarnation has a 40 card deck, bakucores, which are replacing the gate cards, and character cards. Imagine magic the gathering style energy/mana cost cards with a pokemon TCG esque aesthetic.

The colors are factions. You cannot use cards of a different color from that of your 3 Bakugan in your team. Some people on youtube run mono-color decks like all pyrus or all darkus. But from what I've read the factions complement each other and have different kinds of effects and playstyles. Think Magic the gathering color decks.

I could be wrong but after seeing a lot of youtube videos of matches I can say that:
Aquos (Water): Disrupting enemy cards with high energy cost cards. Needs set up to work properly.
Darkus: Sacrifice and discard to achieve various effects. Works better with no cards in hand.
Haos: Very bakucore reliant. Most haos cards allow you to remove bakucores from the opponent's bakugan or get various bonuses based on how many cores you hold.
Pyrus: Burn style cards that inflict damage and have moderate costs. This is the aggressive deck archetype.
Ventus: Energizes your cards for maximum energy efficiency. Their cards are a weird combination of burn and reinforcing bakugans.

Wow I am honestly surprised Bakugan got a reboot, I remember like 2 years ago going on ebay to buy old bakugan as collectibles since I loved mine but gave them away when I outgrew them before.
I am honestly pretty happy and hope the new show and bakugan toys do well, but I kinda wish they had re-branded a different way.
I had imaged the re-brand would keep the little toys but swap to a mobile phone platform like Yu-Gi-Oh or Mtg have their mobile game market.
Basically you would buy the collectible toys, scan either a qr code or something on the toy and it would redeem in game (obviously you would be able to buy new bakugan or earn them with in game currency, same with the ability cards).
Also I just realized that I was 10 when the show first started airing in 2008... Where did the time go...

Why did the big brains at Man of Action think a show designed to sell a toy game shouldn't actually have the characters playing said game? From what I've seen of the show, it's basically kids commanding a monster battle. Kaijudo, Magi-Nation ... that only worked for Pokemon.

Yep, same here, 21 right now btw, I was about 11 or 12 when the OG came out, was already entering my teenage "i'm too old for this" phase. Also I had always been a Yugioh fan as a child, and I saw it as just another attempt to cashgrab off the hype.

But boi, do I regret it, looking into the original game now, it actually seems like it was a rather interesting and well tough out game.

I was embarrassed the first time in years I went to a toy store to buy a small LEGO model too about a year ago, but you drop your spaghetti harder when you are, just walk there like a normal person and ask them.

They have their own Bakugan character cards, whereas Diamonds don't. Each element has its own perks, and Aurelus' is that you sacrifice mechanism for power, which is viable. The fact that it doesn't have support IS its mechanism.

Explain how it's similar at all. Diamond shares the same element as the normal version. Diamond isn't even a proper faction. It's just a special version of the same toy that comes with an additional upgrade card that doesn't even require the Bakugan itself.

I'd imagine the game will get more complex when more people get their hands on it and it starts turning competitive. I've seen at least a couple of people on Youtube show off some interesting combo plays.

In future we're definitely going to need more cards that have trade-offs, like, incentives to hit negative cores in order to get different bonuses and such.

I would love the classic "Bakugan with lowest power wins." card. I remember a lot of the old haos play style was trying to make your bakugan's power as low as physically possible then start spamming ability cards. It was a lot of fun.

Such extreme rule changes were probably easier on the OG format which was all about tricking your opponent, than in the new one which will probably be a lot more reliant on whatever strategy you planned beforehand. But they definitely should work on cards that are counterintuitive like that in the future.

They might be playing the basic version in-show (there are random numbers that fly across the screen), but I haven't seen them use any cards. I don't know if that's because they didn't want to overwhelm kids (somehow Yu-Gi-Oh! and the Bushiroad anime survive) or if that 11-minute run time means they just don't have the time to showcase the proper game.

I think it's dumb either way. The show should be used as a way to teach kids the rules. Instead, it's a mon show with giant monster fights. Still cool in its own way, but probably better suited to selling an action figure line than a toy game.

Scalpers are buying out the entire stocks. The other day I saw a 30 year old dude at Walmart opening 3 boxes at once and he picked out the diamond starter packs, all diamonds and where I got there there was just common shit left.
I got really sad because I realised that I'll probably never get what I want, no matter how early i go to Walmart, there's always gonna be an old stinky dude ruining the fun for everyone else.

No you wouldn't, the deck that got built around that in the OG game's short-lived competitive scene was actually impossible to win against and we really don't need that to ever happen again. The closest you're getting to that in the new game is cards like Might of Cyndeous and Mac that make highest damage win instead of highest power, which serve the same role of being an alt wincon but also don't allow for the same degree of utter nonsense lowest-G-wins effects did.

>Writing is fun enough. It's clearly going for a lighter approach, at least initially, and I'm sure part of that is because of what CN wants out of their programming. It's cute but nothing great, it just does its job in advertising the series and being fun. Plot is nigh-nonexistent but that might change soon.

There's hardly any waifus, bros. Between Runo, Julie, and Alice in the original series, you had the most solid of reasons to whip your solid snake out and get to jerkin' the gherkin. Here we have Lia, who's not even on the same level, and China Riot, who's actually pretty ace if you don't mind jail.

But all in all, it's just "ok". Could be way better, but could be much worse. I think it ultimately does the job a show needs to do - entertain the kiddies, sell some toys.

Sorry, new to toy collecting (with a poor understanding of marketing and economics) but I want to ask: To an extent, don't scalpers help sales? I mean, not when people buy from them, but they have to buy in order to sell, right? Tho you are technically correct in that scalpers can artificially boost sales of a product, they can also kill any hype. If people aren't seeing the toys in the shelves they aren't learning about them and aren't getting interested in them, and even people who get interested in them through word of mouth or other such means might get discouraged (especially children who rely on their parents money) if all the toys they can find are x3 the price. This obviously hurts the product in the long run.

Do you guys think making the show so kid oriented was a good idea? I feel spin master is missing the point, these early to late-2000s shows like Bakugan, Yugioh or Beyblade should prob be focusing on the 20 year olds who are actually going to make up the bulk of their audience.

I would say it is an initially good idea, because it looks like comedies are what kids are watching right now. However, the show has absolutely zero staying power on just it's "wacky lol" humor. Personally I feel the show needs to kind of step up these darker elements it's hinting at and start an overarching plot that actually means something. A good way to do that would literally just copy Yu-Gi-Oh's second season and start some type of massive tournament that follows the rules of the actual game and have team AO uncover something that adds some plot to story.

It's post-OG Ben 10 Man of Action, so the show has that problem where there's a ton of interesting takes and implications

Mind, I'm following the series as it's broadcast, so I'm certain most people have already binged it streaming and know the answers to these concerns, so I don't know how much development they'll end up giving, but it looks like they're trying to build up to that, since a lot of the adults are PISSED they're left out while having the actual money and infrastructure. BUT, considering my familiarity with MoA, I'm not holding my breath for anything more than (very) broad strokes.

Said episodes vary in quality. Really, if you grew up on '90s shounen anime, it's thoroughly palatable and watchable cotton candy, and it does give you at least SOME connection to the game, since it elaborates on the personalities of the given Bakugan. Artulean is for instance a huge dork.

Ok, that's pretty interesting, so they're not the same Bakugan, they're essentially the equivalent of re-trains. I was wondering how it would affect the balance of the game to have Bakugan that were presumably designed with a certain faction in mind be available in another one, but I guess I don't have to worry about that.
It's gonna be an interesting game competitively speaking, there's a lot of factors to take into account, and I hope the developers keep them in mind as they design the game.

On the other hand, maybe they porpusely decided to make the initial release rather limited in order to avoid overflowing the market, and sc*lpers probably aren't helping.

What does concern me a bit is that this is a toyline, so, you're going to find the products in toy stores, but the main appeal is the card game, something that you'd usually expect to find in hobby stores. I'm a bit concerned that toy stores are going to start stocking the single figure products and not the cards, and that hobby stores won't even touch this.

To be fair I never knew anyone who was into the OG, and I was like 11 or 12 when it came out. Hard for me to get how it lasted so long.

At least with the TCG, it adds a new dynamic element to the game, more customization in the form of deck building and just more balancing over all when compared the the absolute random nature of G1 Bakugan where every toy had different G power, even duplicates, cards included.

Japanese toys continue to innovate primarily because Japan has a different philosophy towards toys, they're a product yes, but they take them seriously and try to fully realize them as a concept where as Hasbro for instance, turns Beyblade into a fucking joke relying on pointless gimmicks like special super tall bases or LED features where as over in Japan, Takara treats Beyblade almost like it's a sport or something.

Spin Master assumes it can just rest it laurels on G1's success while doing none of the work to get it out there again, it's fucking real bad start guys.

Japan fully understand how ageless toys really are and it's one of their biggest markets. The toy industry in the west was doing pretty well but if you ask me, backtracking to making toys focused at children only rather than people of all ages chopped off a massive chunk of potential consumers.

A good example is the recent 3/4 inch Star Wars toys made for the sequel trilogy. Regardless of what you think of those movies (they've made modern figures of OT characters too), the toys are absolutely fucking terrible, reduced to only 5 points of articulation with sparse vehicles and pointless kid appeal gimmicks. They are a massive downgrade compared to previous Star Wars toys released by Hasbro and didn't appeal to kids or collectors as they were not only inaccurate to the likeness of the movies, but lacked detail, articulation andproper sets.

Maybe they figured Black Series was enough to satisfy collectors? But why even bother tripping over your own feet by producing millions of 3 inch action figures bloated with gimmicks that ended up shelfwarming.

Here's a 3inch figure Hasbro released back in 2010 for roughly $9.99 and it came with everything shown. Personally, the detail is more impressive at this scale than with the 6 inch black series figures who just feel blown up without the integrity of detail maintained.

Yeah if I remeber correctly it was basically the same random arcross the board. I think there were a few bakugan playsets that had identical G-Power values but those were few and far between. I don't even remeber if they were legal competitively.

I don't remember the canon reasons why the stats were random with Bakugan. But in Chaotic they had a perpouse. Every character card was a scan taken of that character at some random point in time. Maybe that character was sick or injured so their stats were low, but maybe they just had a good meal or worked out so their stats were high. Yeah I could see that hurting the competitive seen, but it did make the stories behind the cards more interesting.

Bakugan dont have rarity per se. The diamonds are a bit rare but most bakugan you can find easily. Diamond bakugan are the same as regular bakugan but they get a different character card and evo card.

Pic related on the other hand is from a local seller, and I am very biased towards it because it saves me the hassle of having to do the import process. But guy is charging me about 1$ per bakugan, which, in 17 items, ends up working out to nearly 20$ extra, not to mention that being almost twice the toys, it's a lot more money.

I get that Spin Master isn't exactly the most experienced company out there but crazily spread out releases like this never really work that well, and if the toyline doesn't perform spectacularly in the US it's gonna make execs think the rest of the world is hopeless because there's only predictions. Of those of you who have managed to get some of the toys and cards: Have you seen any "search" cards in the game? By that I mean, cards that let you draw or search other cards within your deck?

I'm interested to know what y'all think about the fixed 40 card deck, do you think that in the future there might be room to add variable deck sizes? I feel like there might be some strategic value to the idea that you can get more HP at the cost of making your deck more inconsistent.

You can play the OG game with them still, and if you and your friends agree I guess there's nothing stopping you from using them in the new game, but generally speaking they're both incompatible and official rules don't support the old bakus at all.

This is actually interesting, you can look at it as a sacrifice but also as an excuse to play cards that are more situational.
For example: if you play Aquos Hydrorus Ultra you probably want to play a playset of the Hyper Evo but you can also splash 1 of Maximus, now you have 4 chances to evolve your Bakugan and if you draw Max too early it doesn't have to sit on your hand for 8 turns, you can just use it as energy.

I was into the original series and the second one but stopped after. The neo-dragonoid on the left is basically a transformer, but that's cool, it's a neat toy and it's super high quality, i'm amazed at how sturdy it feels for all the moving parts it has.
These chunky boys seem more fitted to playing with the modern hexagon format, since it's impossible to fit 2 of them into the same gate card, and if i'm not mistaken, the gundaliam invaders toys came with little hexagonal gate cards.

What are the Bakugan you always wanted but never got released where you live? For me it were Cross Drago and Helios MK2. For some shitty reason they were japanese exclusives and it sucks because I have Twin Destructor but no Helios MK2 to put it on.
