The issue seems to be the proportions look off. Also doesn't help that it looks like a playmates kiddie toy. That might be the design choice but people are not going to be clamoring to buy this wave as it is, and the baf ain't going to entice people to buy the whole wave.

The design itself is... good enough IMO. It's modernized in the same way as Hasbro's Sentinel, but still recognizably a Sentry. But it's way too goddamn small. I don't need it to be Sentinel huge but it should really be at least 12 inches, 10 at the absolute minimum. But the toy is, what, 8 inches? I mean what the fuck Hasbro? We barely get comic-based Cosmic figures anyway and then when we do you shit out embarassments like this.

What's your problem with the design? It's got all kinds of useless detail, sure, but that's par for overdesigned modern updates. But it looks like a Sentry. Same bowl cut, same purple lips, same color separation. Even got the right lines on the upper torso and shoulders.

The thing is that Kirby was (arguably) influenced by Mezoamerican antiquity and religious art, but the BAF design only references Kirby’s art through the filter of modern fantasy technology.

So everything that was created goes to Marvel, buuuuuuut... sometimes the licensor is so shit that things pass through, like Mattel and the He-man shit or Inhumanoids with Hasbro.
I think everyone's learned from their mistakes since then. Even Marvel did, where they're guaranteed royalties and films from Sony every couple of years. Basically free money, but it's only a problem in hindsight as they finally got their own movie studio going decades later.

The toy actually looks like a robot while the comic version looks like a """Robot""" (i.e. normal human with lines drawn on him). Honestly, even as a kid I hated that kind of look for robots, with the whole "singlet & muscles" bit, it just seems lazy to me.

That said, the figure itself looks too squat. If he were taller and leaner he'd be more imposing. Still, I wouldn't be against army building these guys as they look generic enough to fight just about anyone. Though I certainly won't be buying them with the figures as I have no desire to get the Captain Marvel wave of figures.
