why do people buyfunkos,
basically the easiest answer is that they are cheap and easy to get. you don't have to go to a small obscure independent comic book store to get them. you don't have to deal with buying online. you go to buy groceries at target/walmart you find them. go to buy something at best buy or gamestop? you find them. go to the mall, to hot topic or Spencers for some make up? you find pops. They are so easy to find that a lot of people just got into the hype
then you have to think of the price, these are the cheapest collectibles in the market (relatively speaking) they are cheaper than 7 inch figures that ususally cost 16.99. they are cheaper than NECA or McFarlane that now cost 20 or so. they are cheaper than anime figures.
so you have "toys" that cost half of your regular Mattel or NECA toy and now people can buy the entire series of their favorite movie or tv show. now you can have every character from lord of the rings at half the cost of the regular figures. you can have all the horror icons (Freddy, Jason. Leatherface) and create a horror collection, it has never been easier for people to collect the entire cast of their favorite movie. like star wars? you can have the entire cast now. like Marvel movies? own all the avengers.
and Third, these things are brand new and they are making toys of characters that are old.
the Crow figures from NECA and McFarlane came out 20 years ago. the matrix Figures came out 15 years ago. figures of Lord of the rings are 15-20 years old.
NECA and McFarlane and Mattel do ONE or TWO runs and they close the line. those figures are old and expensive
if someone wants a Frodo toy or a Neo toy they can just get a new funko figure. easy.
I dont collect these but i can totally see the appeal.
cheap, easily accessible and they make everything under the sun, even obscure characters from old movies.
