Can someone explain to me the appeal of toy hunting, or driving to different stores like Target, Ross, Walmart, GameStop, etc. in hopes of finding U.S. figures at regular or marked-down prices? I mostly buy stuff online since I collect nip figures, but started looking at some US figure lines (since some are getting better and better) and noticed how big the toy hunting community is.
Buying online for a figure you want:
+ MUCH larger inventory
+ Easy to find cheapest prices, no markup (best for nip figures), can buy at much cheaper price from second-hand stores like eBay
+ Save gas money, time, energy, frustration after driving all the way to a store
- Shipping fees, customs depending on where you live
- Have to wait to receive stuff
- Hassle to return stuff
- Doesn't help local or independent /toy/ businesses
Buying in-store for a figure you want:
+ Can check QC of the stuff you buy
+ Can get lucky and find figure marked down by a lot
- Need to check inventory of many different stores locally
- Gas money, need to have enough spare time to head over
- Extreme hassle to find popular stuff that isn't marked up
- Don't have to deal with waiting/receiving a package (package theft too), shipping fees, etc.
- Get judged by people seeing a grown ass man in business casual clothes buying toys
Genuinely curious since the pros outweigh the cons for buying online imo.
