Not sure what they are getting at, also with the 16+ stickers. Suppose Rex is being set up like an older brother, like President Business was a father, and the Systar shit being a sister (DUPLO being a younger sibling?).

Can't see a set towing the line between a microscale rendition of a spaceship and some sort of handheld blaster set, with just two slightly exclusive minifigs, doing too well.

Must have focus-tested well enough. Dumb shooting gimmick for the lil kids, microscale for whoever the fuck likes microscale.

It's just those two don't especially well, with their combination in this case also gimping what could have been a decent minifig-scale set. It's like they tried to capture all three markets yet failed to really get anything right in doing so.

this set seems to want to capture three markets;

- the crowd that loves action features (the box art lists 'Action blasts' as a thing, wherein you hold the ship like a NERF gun)
- the crowd that loves Microscale sets (I personally believe this to be an older-than-usual crowd but cannot substantiate this)
- the crowd who just likes minifig-sized models

The problem is that in trying to appease and secure all three of those groups, LEGO seems to have missed the mark three times over. Why, you ask? Because these markets don't mesh well at all, and hamfisting various elements that appeal to various groups takes precious space and pieces away from others. No AFOL is gonna go 'pew pew' with the NERF blasts and no kid is going to treat this set exclusively as a mantlepiece. The folk who love minifigs lose out because the interior will be completely subservient to the other groups, and besides, only two semi-exclusive figs are included.

Big miss at a big pricepoint, for which you can get much, much, much better sets and better value. You could get 13 Benny's Space Squad for the same amount of money, which nets you 52 Classic Space styled minifigs. That beats "Chris Pratt^2; Schizophrenia Edition" with a few raptors you could just farm from the Vest Friend Rex CMF, as far as I'm concerned.

Massively dissapointing that this is some microscale shit. I was greatly looking forward to a release of this ship and hoping for a badass interior at the very least on par with some of the more intricate interiors seen in some of the Star Destroyers and Millennium Falcons. I started working on an old moc again. The storing area and the mock-ups for the cockpit and big engine grill thing were built a few months ago and I had a pretty solid idea of how this should look, but kind of lost interest along the way. Really happy with how it's shaping up so far, but I need to figure out a way to integrate the crane operator into the hull and make the corners look good. And I really need to order some green tiles and cheese slopes

"Held der Steine" (Lit: "Hero of Bricks") is a German youtuber. Lego apparently didn't like his logo, which looks like Lego bricks. They may even have sued him.

If true, it doesn't put Lego in a favourable light. However, since the dude himself comes across as a massive blowhard, I'm not really sympathetic to his case.

Speaking of retardation, this is /biog/. We've been getting the pointy end of the malicious retarded stick for a long while. Btw I have a question.

There's this bonkle site called bzpower. It used to be huge back in the day. Long story short, LEGO used the site to keep interest alive and peer-promote it's products. The company gives the staff and their friends free sets to review, sets for use as prizes in building contests, prototype pieces in unique colours, a shitton of free stuff for their personal stashes and invitations to vip events with plane tickets paid. The staff has denied that LEGO is paying for the site's expenses, though I think I once found a tidbit somewhere proving that it did. The goal is to excite customers about you can do with plenty pieces, though LEGO could be paying them in a non-monetary manner with plastic. The friends, some of whom were LEGO Ambassadors, use their free stuff to win the contests with Bayish behemoths. At some point a winner went as far as to use pieces that hadn't been released yet in colours that were never released (or intended). There were complaints but the staff claimed it was okay because anyone who had attended the (vip) event had access to them.
Anyway, I know squat about the System community. Is LEGO pulling similar things with not-employees in it?

Maybe some more details:
The issue isn't about the logo itself, it's that HdS wanted to trademark it so he could make a bit extra on the side by selling merch like coffee mugs with it on.
That was probably the reason that one of Lego's law firms wrote him (not even an actual C&D letter) that he should change his logo because people might mistake him for Lego itself and in that case MAY sully or lower Lego's reputation and trademark and not represent their quality and standards.
Given his critical stand on Lego's current marketing decisions, quality issues, questionable models and themes and troublesome dealer relationships (he didn't even get any catalogue and plastic bag shipments lately from them) he decided to just cut the ties with Lego itself since he doesn't want to "represent their quality and standards" anymore and now not only feature Lego sets (that he now gets from other providers) in his shop and on review channel but also from rival brands like Cobi, Xingbao, etc.
Only stuff like direct copies from Lepin is where he draws the line.

It always baffled me how they showed what crazy shit you could actually do with the system but never really decided to actually pull off any actual complex builds and instead kept releasing mostly 10-20$ sets with most of the more expensive ones being more of Technic builds with CCBS thrown in.

Since I've just finished building it I've decided to bring you a little bit of Western magic - namely Sheriff's Lock-up.

I don't intend this post to be a review, but I would like to mention that the set is one of the best I've ever seen. The set goes together well and creates a feeling of complete, having a few play features that keep it interesting.

Recently, I've seen Lego move away from buildings/bases and I was wondering why you guys think that is. Is it that children these days no longer see the value in it?

If you'd like any other shots or have questions about the set please let me know. I've recently switched focus from Space to other themes and have been exploring Western a little with some Castle sets on the way.

I read somewhere that since Lego doesn't own the patent or manufacturing rights to the old-style baseplate or roadplate design, they've started to phase them out of production to the point that they're now only really available in the modular buildings like pic related, which go for several hundred dollarydoos.

Also, I would think that the packaging requirements to fit in a 32x32 stud baseplate combined with the shipping costs as well as the shelf space requirments most retailers have are a part of it as well. It sucks though, because I miss getting regular baseplates in sets.

countless hours spent putting minifigs in the barrel to hide and blowing up the prison with the then still printed tile dynamite, still have the STAMP intact and box too. Used the baseplate for my dancestudio eventually.

We do still see a new police station every year but yeah it's probably this. It seems like people want more bang for their buck when buying small-medium sets, and having two vehicles you can smash into each other gives more enjoyment than a house to most kids.

Correct.

Part of this may be because children in the US market (the only market that matters) have been conditioned not to expect bases. In the 1980s, a slew of new federal safety regulations on children's toys were enacted, which caused many formerly successful bases to no longer be feasible products. Large pieces of solid plastic were no-nos, because if dropped from a height onto concrete the plastic could fracture and create sharp edges. This led to a steep drop-off in the number of "bases" produced, because action figures could be constructed of simple and durable plastic shapes that could withstand a high drop without breaking and producing dangerous debris.

Here we are about thirty years later, and there really isn't anything in the toy market on the scale of Castle Greyskull or the USS Flagg.

There's a shop in my city where previous version is still on the shelf for ~90$. It has been there for 2 years by now and I never made my mind about it. I already have Luke's land speeder as a separate set, I hate one-piece dewback (I know it costs a lot on a black market) and will by chibi brick-built one...

I like the pod in the new set... but I miss alien musicians in this set...

Not even close to being remotely true. The reason lego doesn't do it is two reasons.

The traditional baseplate is expensive to manufacture. They quality control elements for lego typically means there is a lot of waste. As some items when poured do not come out correctly. The baseplate is a large piece and thin and is often subject to quality control issues. Most large pieces are. It becomes hare for lego to justify their constant production, and as they have waste + inspection added, it slows production and increases cost.

Also, the baseplate is just that, a baseplate. It limits play use a bit, as it cannot go on top of things. This issue is considered when lego makes sets for general sales. Collectible pieces enjoyed by older fans or families don't take this into consideration.

It seems like there was never a consensus on what the colours were between the designers, and designers opinions seem to change slightly over time.

I posted a link which, while citing a third article, is someone paraphrasing what Jens said. How is that massively different to someone quoting what Jens is saying? I don't think it greatly effects the credibility to be honest.

I don't see the problem though, you can still get 32x32 plates on Bricklink and Bricks & Pieces, the Modular House-exclusive color plates are sometimes even cheaper than those you can buy in stores. 16x16 plates are swapped out for thick/normal plates which I see as an improvement. Only real loss are mountainous baseplates like the Rock Raiders HQ and Ogels Base.

Superpacks aren't real sets, especially when only one was made for a contest. And they totally skipped a summer wave for the spider/scorpion tribes and did two waves for the ice fuckers instead. Worst decision I have ever seen, I keep thinking about how a 100+$ spider set would have looked like with the huge horn pieces that ended up only getting used on the 90$ mammoth and some of the CCBS figures. Everyone knows spiders make for the best sets and they shortchanged them for a single wave with shitty medium and small sets, they definitely deserve all the shit they get for that.

I still wonder how that really works, germans are insular. There is a reason why toy aisles generally are just Lego, cars and board games with some shelf-warming roleplaying toys and actionfigures for Star Wars or random superhero type movies. Maybe he has a chance but I doubt that a youtube channel helps him that much in his personal sales for that one brick and mortar store when most customers according to Lego are children and AFOL types that watch him make up 10-15% of the sales). Sounds like he is working for free as a marketer of those brands. Or has he talked about his demographics once? I have only occasionally seen videos of his.

I really doubt that there will ever be a Star Wars series though it could happen. The Lego Star Wars magazine exists and even though most baggies include models and the few figures they put in look like they come from overproduction rather than actual popularity it could still be possible, especially in a time like this where Star Wars is seen as toxic by many people.
I will probably be unhappy with one since most of the figures will be bound to be re-decos of existing main characters when such a series would be needed for figures that have no place in sets and need more prints like Cantina/Jabba aliens and prequel Palpatines.

When it comes to current toys I believe these are the main issues: generic and blend or overly complected and detailed (in Lego case) designs, non cohesive and coherent toyline just random waves and rolling with as it goes, lack of paint, lack of vehicles and playsets, stupid scaling (whether is lack of consistency in scale or doing too big toys), outdated 5 PoA (doesn't need to be adult collector level, 11 PoA would be sufficient), general lack of creativity and good play value.

Last week I got my first Lego set since childhood, the overwatch Bastion set. I liked it so much I bought another one immediately(picture related) and I just unpacked it. Damn that thing is huge. Looking forward to putting it together.

You know, between just those two sets I probably now own more pieces than after my entire childhood spend collecting Lego - I checked the other day and the set I spent months saving allowance/gifts for was barely over 500 pieces.

I'm 25 myself and owned pic related back in the day, which in hindsight really wasn't a great set (for me as a kid). The style of faces in the line were never really replicated elsewhere.

Today's update. Reworked an old fire engine that has the life boat rescue option. It carries 8 fire fighters, a raft, and a ton of gear. Please note this was built way before they had wheel-well arches and had to use inverse angles. That was what we had back in the days.

A good thread challenge might be to build something from an older style of brick. Say before a certain year. You have to get creative with less options.

This song is surprisingly forgettable. I keep coming across it then forgetting it and finding it again posted somewhere else.

I feel it has potential but the auto-tune aspect does not really work and it is too blatant in both the acknowledgement that the song is supposed to be used to brainwash the heroes and that they are trying to make it catchy.

Like 'Everything is Awesome' the problem is the song sucks other than the chorus. With 'Everything is Awesome' the chorus was good, but in 'Catchy Song' its not.

The Lego Movie 2 as a whole seems to encapsulate this. It's a bundle of left-over ideas from the first movie such as "The song can brainwash people", "Part of the movie is a musical", etc...

The Jango Fett in the new cloud city set is a lot better than the Jango Fett in the original cloud city set. I have both cloud cities sets and can vouch for that the original was literally just arms with a rocket detail while this Jango has detail all over.
The Slave 1 and Cloud Car are great.
Alot more detail than the original

People will say this is a bad cloud city set and conviently leave out how bad of a seller the original cloud city set actually was back in the day till scalpers set the price in the aftermarket because of literal rocket prints lol

Disney is feeling a lot of pressure right now. The Solo movie damaged the brand and lost them 100 million and combined with The Last Jedi lost them nearly all of their bargaining power for reserved screens.

The biggest lose has been on the video game front. EA failed Disney worse than Rian or Kathleen Kennedy with battlefront that lost the company a billion in stock value and still has not become profitable.

Their biggest clients, Lego and Hasbro are in full panic mode as they rely on Star Wars as their main cash cows and are now losing shelf space and seeing abysmal numbers because no one is interested in the new merchandise.

Likewise, their animation department is falling apart with the Star Wars Resistance trailer getting 90% dislikes. They had hoped to corner the same market as the semi-success Rebels and Clone Wars series had.

Everything is riding on Episode 9 and Rian set it up to fail before it even came out.

In a way, I think Rian and JJ are based. Had they just consulted with actual fans and George and filtered it through professional directors, focusing on making appealing characters, new and aesthetically pleasing vehicles / war machines and settings tied together with a story that neither discounted, upstaged or robbed the originals, it'd be unfathomably successful. George actually had the right idea of going forward in time and releasing a trilogy about the beginnings of the Jedi/Sith and Palpatine up until the events of Episode 1.

Unfortunately, the damage is done and it will continue to die unless a miracle occurs.

Lego is going to try to curb this loss of sales on their biggest theme by reintroducing classic space

I can't tell if your post has fallen victim to word filtering or not, but I guess JJ and Kennedy did some good in their own way. Companies have been increasingly abusive towards their customers (both consumers and stores) for the past years and deserve to burn for it. While it will take nothing short of a miracle for the higher ups to understand why their profits are dropping, at least the destruction of Star Wars will force them to try other things.
I'd like to see a small shooter game where companies such as LetGo and Hasbeen are literally crumbling and the player has to gun down the management as they flee before they can escape into other companies.

Probably the worst example I noticed this year is the Ninjago Legacy Samurai Mech.
It's 15$/€, the same price as the standard Exo Force mechs or even the "canister" sets from Bionicle G2 from two years ago, yet it's tiny as fuck and worth a tenner at most.

You can't even really say that it features more minifigs since the skeletons don't act the same since their parts aren't pre-assembled like minifig torsos and legs and are also all featured as normal construction pieces in other sets.
No matter how you look at it, the Stealth Hunter is the better bang for the buck.

I've seen a few people talking about the Brickheadz and I wanted to say I can kind of see both sides. One the one hand they are an interesting take but they are little more then a novelty or just spare parts. I mean if you like them fine, I'm not going try and argue anyone out of buying them. To me that's a net loss - and while there's no reason to get upset over it one must do all one can to make sure the new product fails. That way, hopefully, two outcomes are possible:
1. They return to the old status quo and continue to cater to me - which is good for me.
2. They go belly up and bankrupt which creates an opening in the market. An opening means a chance for a company to come along and cater to me.
Either way - it's natural for an individual to not support and attack things that do not benefit him.

Thanks, I‘m super happy with how it turned out. I had a hard time figuring out what to do with the back/arms, but it worked out really well, has some neat little functions and turned out surprisingly stable. I definitely want to make more like this, probably some rover next.

This set contains 322 pieces and retailed for 50 Dollars.

There is no reason they couldn't re-release it for 40 bucks nowadays and still have it be a better value than anything else on the market

Lego provided those polybags to be used as free giveaway items.

TRU has a bad habit of putting old freebies on the shelf for sale, despite being told not to.

At no point in time has Lego ever sold a polybag that only contains a SW fig.

I don't like minidolls very much because of the reduced poseability and customization compared to minifigures.

I do enjoy comfy builds (although that's pretty subjective) and I do enjoy many things that could be considered feminine, but that's pretty vague.

I honestly don't know. I don't like the Catchy Song, but then again, I don't like Everything is Awesome as well. As for the film: I fully expected the first one to be one gigantic ad and ended up loving it, so I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.
