Hasbro is able to spread the cost by mass manufacturing shit.

I thought we were talking about real models?
I scratched built shit since i was a kid just to make actual bases for my figures. Star Trek, GI Joe, and all sorts of techno-looking places by taking apart electronics and putting them on formboard, styrofoam, cardboard/plastic boxes, etc. Making my own cabins, underground bunkers, and missile silos out of wood.
As i grew older and had more money, i'd do the shit i saw from Discovery Channel's Movie Magic by using model kits, broken toys, and whatever junk that could be made to look like container ships, computer rooms, etc as settings for my GI Joes.
Today i have access to a laser cutter, so making accurate panels would be relatively easy, but that's still a lot of time to dedicate toward something i'd rather just pay money for to have it already made for me.
$500 is cheap when it's all said and done.
