To me they're a particularly good example of how the west can't do "kawaii"; there's more to looking cute than just deforming proportions/putting big eyes on things. It doesn't work unless you can also confer a feeling of vulnerability, and Pops look like they have no soul and will eat yours at the first opportunity.
