Their theory was that it was the 10th anniversary and the kids who grew up with the PT were going to be huge fans who were now older and had more money to spend. They were severely wrong.
Lucasfilm has a huge influence on what Hasbro does, KK even admitted it in a video interview before TFA came out.
Pegwarmers do and always have happened. BUT what so many of the jackasses here get wrong in their rush to be snarky assholes (and mistake genX for boomers) is WHY something is pegwarming.
Why did Yarna Gargan pegwarm? Because they sold through so many cases of her assortment where every single other figure sold. Every 1-per-case Gargan meant a 99% sell-through of her case. 1999 TPM pegwarmers were the result of MASSIVE over-ordering from everyone expecting TPM to be a huge hit, with everyone either wanting to play with the toys, gift the toys, or speculate and hoard them expecting vintage 1978 levels of value in the future. 2009 TPM 3D was a huge error in judgment, and not only did the merch do poorly because people weren't interested (and killed further 3D releases), but the old shit was still available for pennies on the dollar on ebay.
Rose Tico is pegwarming because the entire line is pegwarming, AND places like Entertainment Earth were able to order her in solid cases of just Roses, because Lucasfilm told them she would be an important new main character. But everything from the Disney era is still backed up and available at the discount merchandisers.
So for all the simple-minded ragebabies out there, consider WHY something pegwarms. Is it because everything sells through but one or two (even happened in the 70's and 80 with Tusken Raiders) while massive amounts of cases sell, or is it the massive overproduction, or is it because nobody is buying this shit at all?
