The problem is people prefer naturally evolving franchises and things that create subgenres, and the people greenlighting movies have no clue what'll end up being that.
Look at shit like Blair Witch, or Annabelle. Hot, fresh, new. Reliable series to get invested in.
Just look at Happy Deathday for example. People fucking love it, not just because it was good but because its looking like its going to create a subgenre for imitators now.
To get interest back into the Universal Monsters, you need to do the same thing. Either make a reliable and good movie that will naturally evolve into a franchise, which won't happen with execs nipping at the heels for a Dark Universe, or something that throws people for just enough of a loop that they'll tell fucking everyone that they need to see it without relying on a youtube video explaining what the fuck happened.
