Artists can and should use any form of reference.
1) real modes
2) photos of real models
3) drawings with a similar pose that you want
4) action figures (i bought couple of posable Wrestling Figures like picrelated) but they usually have flaws because they can't bend that much
5) wooden dummy - the shitties and lamest thing. usually bought by a normie who "feels like an artist :)"
6) An ultimate way - a 3D program. I use picrelated ArtPosePro but again its very limited and if you make hard to make poses - limbs just clip with torso and it looks bad.
Seems that Phicen dummy is the best way to invent new poses for an artist right now.
It's basically a little tiny person that can always make any pose you want
