So, I've got a bet with friends - Star Wars aside, what would you consider the three most 80's toy lines to be?

I'm assuming most peoples' first two choices would be Transformers and G.I. Joe, but what's the third? He-Man? TMNT? Ghostbusters?

The vast majority of those toys came out in the 80’s. I dunno what planet you were living on back then, but Star Wars toys were definitely landmark 80s toys (both in how they rewrote the rule book for how media licencing + toys worked and how they affected the toy industry after they were gone by just happening to dwindle out just as the Reagan administrion lifted the rules against TV shows being toy advertisements, clearing the way for the creation of He-Man, Transformers and the G.I. Joe revival.)

SELLING being the key word there. They cold have gone after all of it but initially ignored it "cvuz da targi tmerkit iz littel gurlz only" then later tried to embrace the bronies as a potential customer base.

That's why I'd still argue that TMNT still counts as an 80's toy line. That doesn't mean it was EXCLUSIVELY an 80's toy line - just that it was popular and influential enough during i's short existence before the decade ended to still be counted among the top toylines of the whole decade.

I haven't sold mine, but Hasbro licensed some 3rd party repros last year, and I still can't bring myself to buy them. Hasbro's punishment for FIM is that they're now tethered to those six obnoxious characters, and can't release hundreds of cute sofubis anymore, just those six, for eternity. Bringin girl's stuff into the mix, I'd probably swap out He-Man for Care Bears or Strawberry Shortcake. (Cabbage Dolls were probably the best-selling girl's toys, but those seemed to skew so young that I'm ignoring them).

Anyway, can anyone explain to a non-American how did Clinton exactly tackle the issue of stealth marketing stuff to kids with cartoons? Because something like the hypercommercialized Pokémania at the turn of millennium wasn't that different from anything the 80's had to offer.

The Secret Wars line was a big deal to me in the 80s, mainly for the black spider-man costume. I can remember started to read comics for the first time in the 80s because Spider-man got his black costume (this was a time when it was rare for big characters to change costumes). Getting the SW Black spider-man toy was huge because it made Spidey feel grimdark to me as a kid (this was before Venom was created)

I had a similiar reaction when the DC Super Powers toyline that came out around the same time made a Firestorm figure. I remember riding my bike into town to the big mall we had that had a Kay Bee toys in it to buy the Firestorm figure early on a saturday morning.

Transformers & He-Man for the jump in creativity and marketing.

Jem for the "holy shit I'm glad that decade is dead" dose of sheer ugliness and bad ideas that could have only come from then. Sure She-Ra sort f leaned that way as far as colors went but it was nowhere near as close to being a insulting trainwreck as "stolen ideas, the doll line" Nothing about it was original, they copied 80s glam rockers(the irony being that they were copying men who dressed like fags) and ugly fashion designers and did nothing unique.

I can't give much to GI Joe because it was just a condensed version of the 60s poseable soldier toy, and the size & vehicles had already been done by Star Wars.

Nah - I'm not even a G.I. Joe fan (though I lusted after some of the vehicles and figures back in the day), but the 80's G.I. Joe line was pretty much a complete from-the-ground-up reinvention almost completely divorced from the bland, knock-off Barbie G.I. Joe doll line from the 60's, with WAY more articulation in the figures and play value in the playsets than Star Wars.

It would've been interesting if Star Wars had hung around longer to give G.I. Joe an actual fight, rather than dying off right at the *exact* same moment G.I. Joe (and He-Man and Transformers) was arriving to eat its lunch.

Yeah, GI Joe is definitely the most 80s toyline there was. It actually reflected the time as well, not only with pop culture, but actual culture and events at the time.
GI Joe may not have reached the high points as Transformers, but it was still huge every single year it existed in the 80s and lasted much longer too. IT's high point actually came after the TF died.

GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man, and TMNT were the big (action figure) lines throughout the 80s.
Anyone who says differently is wrong.
