Do you think there a fine line between being a collector and a hoarder?

What do you do when you want to keep everything in your collection, but your place ends up looking too cluttered, or you simply have no space for everything?

I'm currently in the midst of moving from my parents place into a new house and have realized I've accumulated a lot of toys, figures, plushies and trinkets over the years.

While I'm trying to pull a Marie Kondo and try to only take with me what sparks joy, I've realized everything I have sparks joy.

What do I do? How do you make sure you don't go into cluttered hoarding territory with your collection?

They are worlds apart from one another.
I'm no expert on hoarders, but aren't they people that don't take out their garbage? And/or they don't throw anything remotely potentially useful away and end up with houses full of crap? Sure, there may be differences between garbage-people and say, a depression-era grandpa that saves anything remotely useful but still has good hygiene, but that whole spectrum is a far cry from say, someone that has 25 different Soundwaves on a shelf.
Can someone be a collector AND a hoarder? Sure why not. Does that make every collector a hoarder? Of course not. To think so would be retarded.
Myself, I have sold off items and collections I lost interest in, and was happy to recoup the money I had in those items. I don't have a much space in closets now, but I also don't have a home full of piles of boxes.
As to taking up space, there is nothing wrong with paring your collection down to fit a smaller living area, but there is also nothing wrong with being cramped for a while, until you get roomier digs. I would hate to regret losing treasures because I lived in a small apartment for a year.

My buddy from highschool had a mom that I thought was a hoarder. Turns out, her mom and aunt had died and they had lots of family possessions she had inherited, and she couldn't bear to get rid of them. I guess they couldn't afford storage units or something too.
So what about situations like that? It's not a case of uncontrollable spending, or not being able to get rid of things in general. Just the deceased-family attachment to objects. Is "hoarding" defined as something psychological, or is it so open to as include grief and hardships?

I think the problem with this sort of thinking is that there's a very thin line between "memories" and junk. Anything can really have memories and/or sentimentality attached.

For me it's a bit by bit process, every time I spring clean there's always a few relics of the past I toss out. Just the other day I threw out old certificates and art work from elementary that I kept for no particular reason other than novelty. For generations of past they accumulate so much in the household and their decor was sort of centralized around cumbersome furniture and nic nacs. If you go into an elderly household, there's a piece of furniture on every tile it seems.

Minimalist is a very newage concept I think.

Be careful if you start getting rid of stuff. Don't get rid of stuff just because you feel you have to. Get rid of it because you don't want it anymore. Here's an example: I collect Marvel Legends and bought a few out of impulse or because I liked the suit. Now I have a few figures that I don't really care for. I went through my collection and forgot I had that figure and was like 'oh cool' and put him back in. Like why even own it if I don't care? I'm planning to get rid of them along with other figures I got over the course of collecting in bulk or impulse. Also its fun to pull out older toys and admire them (like you're doing). It helps slow down the collection.

Try doing a weekly rotation of your display and keep the others stored in a closet or somewhere else where your store your boxes. I helps a lot when your place start to look like a clusterfuck of figures. But I wouldn't worry unless your place starts to look like this.

They were hoarders, that's hoarding.

Regarding near everything as sentimental is also a hoarder thing, it's another nuerotic bullshit excuse to not get rid of anything.

By "possessions", do you mean ordinary crap they couldn't throw away, or stuff older generations typically liked to collect like antique dolls, teacups, Hummel figurines, Bradford Exchange plates, Precious Moments figures..?

I actually had that problem too where it wasn't exactly a hoarding issue, but my shelves were just overly cluttered to where it wasn't a good look. In my case I ended up rotating what I had displayed every month or two, though. But basically it's nice to have tidier shelves where individual pieces have room to breathe and be appreciated on their own, and if you want to set up themes like 'this time around it's robots, or Nintendo stuff'. It'll also eventually give you a better sense of which toys you value more, if you find yourself wanting to pull some out more than others, or ones you kinda keep leaving in storage.

something that may help anyone trying to get rid of sentimental items- take a picture of the item and get rid of the physical object that's taking up space. Doesn't work for everything but it can help.

This, really. China, Nice old furniture, framed art, vases, porcelain stuff, some lamps. Nothing I could see was trash, garbage, clothing, though there were some boxes. It's not like I went through all of their possessions that were boxed up.
