I hate this. I hate this urge within that makes me want to compel to spend money and feeling like some sort of addict when I feel I can't own a fgure I saw but really wanna own it.The feeling just never goes away and you can't stop thinking about the figure. It just doesn't stop being an issue until FINALLY you relent and buy the figure.... And get that sweet, sweet endorphin release of happiness... Until it starts again later with something else.

How do you deal, /toy/ anons?

Stick to a genre and don't deviate. Don't buy more than one of the same figure (even variants). Also, don't collect expensive shit that costs $100 per toy. Horror figs and dolls are pretty cheap compared to other shit out there though. Sorry fren.

You know what's funny? The additiction isn't limited to just your hobby that you think it is.

As soon as you get into something else the addiction shifts. You suddenly find you don't care as much for buying toys if you have something else you want to buy instead. It's good because you realise it's not collecting or toys you're addicted to, it's just buying shit for the dopamine hit. The bad is that it doesn't really help alleviate it.

I've gone from collecting toys to other stuff, retro games, clothes, shoes, watches, etc etc. The addiction hasn't gone away, it just shifts from thing to thing.

If something random sneaks up on me that I want, something else has to go from my planned goals. If I dead lock on both I consider getting neither, and then the one I do want surfaces in my my mind

I use to just buy everything and sell stuff when it lost it's charm but 2015 was a wake up call when my purge was almost 7k of toys and that was telling me I got to get this better under control

The trick is to get those highs from other things that are free or low costing. I'm starting to understand that stupid bird watching meme from the 70s ~90s, you get that high of finding something but your wallet isn't destroyed for it.

Setting goals and budgeting are good. I like having imaginary wants, and a few grails, as what to "work towards" and get stuff I like along the way. Also I always try and get as much enjoyment out of it before putting it on the shelf, or I sell it. I got no room in my life for a toy that doesn't spark joy

Because, and I'm 100% serious about this, the cure is to open a legitimate toy sales business. Order a few dozen cases of the best toys you can from a distributor, sign up for shows at $100+ a pop, deal with poorfags begging for half wholesale or not buying at all, and turn your living room into a fucking dump full of stuff you couldn't sell for free.

It costs about $30K but every time I look at a Hasbro TransFormer or a Figma, I throw up in my mouth. 3 years of this shit did what 2 decades of fruitless hunts and the mocking of my peers never could.

Slippery slope is real.

What makes it worse is that I make quite a lot of money so spending is not an issue, as a family man in a big city I just don’t have room to store all this stuff. But then I can’t be bothered to sell stuff cause the amount of money you get for opened figures is not worth the time. And it would feel like a waste to just throw them away.

Sounds like you need to stop buying so much crap that is hard to resell. There's a ton of stuff that is released in limited runs like most import figures and reselling those even opened you break close to even or can turn a profit.

Legitimately this. I fell hard down the slippery slope when I had lots of disposable income, but then a change of career and some crappy life situations led to where I really only had a hundred bucks or so a month leftover and couldn't spend it on toys anymore, so I really had to get a handle on picking and choosing what I really wanted.
Things are much better now, but I still retain that "do I *REALLY* need this?" sense that takes the legs out from a lot of my would-be impulse buys nowadays.

Used to blow 80% of a paycheck on figures and games. I guess it's easier for me since I have so many already - at this point it's like I have to look to find something I -really- want, but if I come across something randomly and am like "shit, I would genuinely like to own that" then it is usually one of the couple of things I treat myself to a month.

You eventually learn to know what you will and won't regret buying. I also think purging myself of 70% of my video game collection made me a lot less retarded/materialistic. I'm also in my 30s and engaged so idk, that kinda stuff makes you want to rather spend the extra pocket money on things you'll remember and share with another human being rather than bullshit on a shelf that you plan to melt down posthumously into a plastic SHF branded coffin.

It goes away with time. You realize that the endorphin rush was never that big to begin with and that all it takes is looking at your shelf to realize that you truly are not happy.
Eventually you will find that the joy you got from opening a new toy is more or less the same as opening a box of trash bags to throw out the garbage in your kitchen and it becomes easier to ration what you want/need in your collection.

Life is a series of compromises and collecting is no different. Instead of being horrified of your spending, be happy you still feel something about it. Don't stress the money spent, if you're not putting yourself in any dire situations. There's always more money out there to be had and in the end you can't take it with you when you're gone.

Right now I only hate, no, despise not having the money to splurge on toys.
My current goal is to make a stop motion series with toys but making a decent cast is a pain in the ass. I picked the protagonist a while ago but I need to custom the thing so it feels like the character I'm writing it as.
Mooks are the fucking worst because they often cost as much as the main characters but I know they'll only appear on a single frame in the background but without them the world would feel empty; and yet background characters as a concept alone are worse than that so I might just have overhaul the entire thing so it's more like a western or some shit.

I know it's a really stupid goal for a NEET to have but that and not making my dad cry are the only things keeping the noose away from me.
I have no fucking clue what I want to do with my life or if I'll stick with whatever it is that I pick to do, my country is not big into animation, and every news I hear predict a global collapse in at least a decade so I want to pick something I could use in the future Mad Max landscape.

Don't know how it is where you are, but give something with shitty manual labor a shot, stuff like airports or city jobs tend to pay pretty well because no one wants to do them. I'm not even kidding, like three or four years ago I was spinning my wheels in general and struggling to make pre-orders, so I got a part-time backbreaking job. Nobody else there gave a shit so like 80% effort got me moved to full-time, promoted, and I lost a good 50 pounds. I literally turned my life around to be able to buy more toys.

I guess the next step is to get married so I have someone to sign for my packages.

Thanks for the advice but I'm not sure I could use it.
Since I am on a third world country, manual labor is just cheap labor and there are plenty of people coming from the interior that put a lot of effort.
I'm also nearing 30 years old so I'm not sure how many youthful years, or "employable years", I have left and while my family is willing to help me with a career they will only do it if I start before I become 30; my issue is that I don't know what I want to do.
